Obituary

Wilma "Billie" Hoekstra, age 93, of Twin Valley, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 in the Twin Valley Living Center.

Wilma Isabelle Nafziger was born February 13, 1915, the daughter of Joseph Nafziger and Nettie Buell, in Pipestone, Minnesota, where she spent her childhood. As a young woman, Billie moved to Twin Valley and was united in marriage to Martin Hoekstra on April 3, 1933. The couple immediately began farming in the Twin Valley area. In 1940, they purchased a farm South of Twin Valley where they made their home for over 50 years. Billie was very active helping Martin with the farm work while raising their sons. She milked cows daily and often hayed the field with infants in hand. Billie also worked for many years as a cashier for Odin's Market in Twin Valley. In 1998, they moved in to the Normandy Apartments in Twin Valley. After Martin's death in 2002, Billie remained in her apartment until 2007 when she moved into the Twin Valley Living Center.

Billie loved flowers and spent many hours in the garden. In past years, Billie and Martin traveled around the United States visiting family. They also liked to attend rodeos and Billie was in a bowling league for several years. She liked to work with her hands and often spent quiet time knitting, crocheting or embroidering. Billie enjoyed reading books and playing cards, especially Hollywood Rummy with her family.

Billie is survived by two sons, Dennis (Renae) Hoekstra and Robert (Arlene) Hoekstra, all of Twin Valley; two sisters, Marion Mahoney of Pipestone, MN, and Glady Thoreson of Detroit Lakes, MN; 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
