Wayne L. Makey, age 69, of rural Waubun, MN died Monday, September 27, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Wayne Lloyd Makey was born on July 1, 1941 to Martin and Priscilla (LaGue) in White Earth, MN. At the age of 7, he moved with his family to Orlando, FL. Wayne was a 1959 graduate of William R. Boone High School in Orlando. He entered the United States Navy in 1960 and spent time in Bermuda and on the aircraft carrier, USS Independence. After his honorable discharge, he worked in construction and then later for Boeing Kennedy Space Center in facility maintenance. After retiring from Boeing, Wayne returned to the White Earth area in 1988 with his daughters, Melissa and Jamie. He was yearning to spend time in the woods and being closer to "indian country." Wayne loved to hunt, fish and simply be outdoors. His fishing adventures often took him to Canada and Devils Lake. Wayne worked for Schoenborn Concrete in Mahnomen, MN, and then for a brief time at the Shooting Star Casino. Most recently, Wayne served as the maintenance manager for the White Earth Reservation Tribal Council. He truly treasured the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren, Wayne cherished each and every one of them.
Wayne is survived by two daughters, Melissa (Merlin Dakota) Makey of White Earth and Jamie (Jeremy Person) of Waubun; nine grandchildren: Dion, Emmit, Jeremy Jr., Tyson, Taylor, Dayton "Buddy", Merlin Jr., Cheyla and MaKayla; a brother Don (Carolyn) Makey of Homosassa FL; and a sister Janice Belcher of Cocoa, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held at 11 am on Friday, October 1, 2010 at the White Earth Community Center in White Earth. Rev. Paul Larson was the officiant. Wayne's grandchildren were the honorary urn bearers. The White Earth Veterans Association Honor Guard and MNARNG Honor Guard provided the military honors.
