Wayne O. Longtin, 80, of Mahnomen, MN, passed away on April 7, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Wayne was born on January 13, 1937, in Walhalla, ND. He was one of 10 children born to Henry and May (Beaudoin) Longtin. Wayne entered the workforce at the young age of 13, and two years later became a fulltime employee at the Burt Schwitzer Potato Company in Walhalla. He met his future wife, Irene Snider, at the roller skating rink in Walhalla which was managed by Irene's father and brother-in-law. Wayne and Irene were united in marriage on December 15, 1955, in Neche, ND. In 1957, Wayne began his career in the grain business working as the manager of the Walhalla Farmers Elevator Seed Plant. The couple lived on a farm near Walhalla, ND. While living there, they welcomed their first two children, Peggy and Shelly. In 1962, Wayne became general manager of the Farmers Elevator in Circle, MT. While living in Montana, the couple welcomed two more children, Kelly and Patty. In 1971, the family moved to Mahnomen, MN and Wayne became the general manager of the Mahnomen Farmers Co-op Grain Association. Under his leadership, the elevator grew substantially and made great strides in the grain industry. Wayne and Irene remained in Mahnomen, raising their family and making many connections within the community. Wayne retired from the elevator on July 1, 1994. Following his retirement, he continued raising livestock and farming in Mahnomen County. Last fall, Wayne and Irene sold their home in Mahnomen and moved to Lilac Homes in Moorhead, MN.
Over the years, Wayne was active in a number of organizations. Wayne served as president and secretary of the Red River Valley Chapter of the Grain Elevator and Processing Society. Wayne also served as a board member for the Northern Minnesota Harvest States Cooperatives Affiliated Managers Associations, the Harvest States Cooperatives Affiliate Advisory Committee on Insurance and the Manager Advisory Board. Wayne served six years as a District 1 Director of the Farmers Elevator Association of Minnesota. He was a member of the Minnesota OSHA Advisory Committee. Upon retirement, Wayne and Irene organized the Retired Grain Dealers Association, holding annual social gatherings in Mahnomen.
Wayne also took an active interest in community organizations and generously contributed his time. He served on the Mahnomen City Council and the Mahnomen County and Village Hospital Board. Wayne also served on the Mahnomen School District Board. He served as the Mahnomen Boosters Association President and chaired the Wild Rice Days celebrations. Wayne was a Mahnomen Lions member and was active with 4-H and the Mahnomen County Fair. Wayne is a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, the Elks Lodge in Detroit Lakes, MN, a 4th Degree Knight of the KC's, Sno-Drifters Snowmobiling Club and past treasurer of the Lynwood Lake Association.
During his free time, Wayne enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family. Wayne especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They made his eyes light up just by walking into the room. Each of them has treasured memories of time with Grandpa Wayne. In later years, Wayne and Irene enjoyed the casino and many concerts and performances.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene, Moorhead, MN; children: Peggy (Terry) Steinmetz, West Fargo, ND, Shelly (Loren) Zimmel, Mahnomen, Kelly (Diana) Longtin, Dalton, MN, and Patty Nystrom (Jeff McCracken) West Fargo, ND; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Scott Steinmetz, Matt (Heidi) Steinmetz and their children: Tanner, Ashton, and Gabriella, Gina (Pat) Noll and their children: Kaden, Marcus, and Natalie, Chris (Julie) Zimmel and their children: Carter, Aubree, and Nolan, Josh Longtin, Nathan Longtin, Maddie Longtin, Nick Salentine, Jake Salentine, Mia Nystrom, and Max Nystrom; two brothers, Lonnie Longtin, Walhalla, ND, and Clair (Susie) Longtin, Cavalier, ND; sister, Martha Hoffarth, Marshfield, WI; brother-in-law, Ronald Thompson, Montevideo, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Orise Carpenter, Cyril, Paul, and Elmer "Rami" Longtin, Birdella Morin, and Priscilla Thompson.
Visitation will be held tomorrow, April 10, 2017 from 5-8 pm, with a prayer service at 7 pm, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen, MN, and one hour prior to the funeral.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, also at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
