Wayne P. Hetland of Hendrum, MN, passed away Saturday morning, May 21, 2011, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. He was 77. Wayne was born in rural Shelly, MN, on March 3, 1934, to parents William and Mildred (Johnson) Hetland. Wayne was an active student and enjoyed Future Farmers of America and playing football. He graduated from Halstad High School in 1952, and farmed with his father in Shelly until 1955.

In 1955, Wayne moved to Breckenridge, MN and attended ND State School of Science. He graduated in 1957, and worked at Wing Pontiac in Wahpeton. He married Marlene Tollerud in 1956, at First Lutheran Church in Ada, MN. He opened Hendrum Standard Service in November 1960, when he moved to Hendrum with Marlene. He partnered with his brother Eldon and formed Hetland Auto in 1984. He sold the business and retired in 2010. He truly cherished his many loyal customers and friends.

Wayne was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hendrum, and served on the council for several years. He enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. He served on the city council and was a volunteer firefighter for 34 years. Wayne was active in the Valley Cruisers and enjoyed sharing his classic cars with family and friends.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Marlene; daughters Laurie (Darrell) Hanson, Patricia, and Mardi of Moorhead; sons Steven of Moorhead and Paul of Bloomington, MN; grandchildren Michael, Kristin and Angela of Moorhead; sister Barbara (Eddie) Bernhardson of Moorhead; brother Eldon (Robin) of Shelly, MN; sister Janice (James) Hagen of Stewartville, MN; brother-in-law Glenn (Jean) Tollerud of Moorhead; twelve nieces and nephews, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Service: 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hendrum, MN.

Visitation: Tuesday, May 24, 2011 from 5:00-7:00pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm at the Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN.
