Walter Thomas Hill, 83, known to most as "Yum" passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018, while on a family vacation in Fertile, Minnesota. He was born November 11, 1934, to Walter and Mary (Kostanko) Hill in Iron. He grew up in Iron and attended school in Forbes and Eveleth. Walt married Jean Duhant on April 27, 1957, at St. John's Polish Catholic Church in Virginia. They lived in Virginia for 3 years before making their home in Iron, raising two children. Walt worked several jobs through the years. His jobs included S&S Service, working for the City of Iron snow plowing and was the constable, hauling sand & gravel, and mechanic work from his garage. He retired from Malton Electric, and then went back to work for Holmes Recycling.
One of Walt's favorite things to do was to spend time at "Cowpie Lake" with family and friends. He enjoyed stoking the fire in the porch, playing video poker, golf cart rides, morning coffee at Crossroads, and he loved playing the slots. Walt was the longest standing member in the Laurentian Divide Kampers club. He was always the first person to make a motion to adjourn the meetings and the first in line for food. He will always be remembered for dancing around the campfire to "warm his buns."
Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Jean, children: Shelly (Doug) Austinson, and Scott (Sheree) Hill; grandchildren: Bo (Brie) Austinson, Lacey (Keith) Bisig, Kyle (Tara Waldvogel) Hill, Collin Hill, (their mother Jessie Hill), and Cooper Hill; great-grandchildren: Mia Austinson, Charli Austinson, Caden Spiering, and Jace Hill; sister: Phyllis Mattson, step-siblings: Ruth, Bobby, Freddie, Dale, Kenny, Eugene and Evelyn; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and step-mom Ailie.
A memorial service will be held at the Faith United Lutheran Church in Iron on Saturday July 21, 2018, at 11:00 am. Visitation will be begin at 10:00 am. Pastor Jim Raisanen officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Forbes Cemetery.
