Obituary

Michael Liebl, age 74, of Mahnomen, MN, died Saturday, September 21, 2019, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home surrounded by his family.

Mike was born in Detroit Lakes, MN, on March 2, 1945, to Wilfred and Camilla (Belshan) Liebl. He grew up in Mahnomen and attended St. Michael's School through the 8 th grade. He then went to Mahnomen Public High School, from which he graduated in 1963.

Mike married his high school sweetheart, Dianne Faye Neustel, on May 8, 1965. They made their home in Mahnomen and continued to reside there during their entire 54-year marriage.

Mike was never one to sit still. Early on in the couple's marriage he owned and operated a bulk milk route with his father and also owned and operated the gas station currently on the corner of Highways 59 and 200. Eventually, Mike worked as a paver operator for Thorson Construction, retiring in 1996. He also sold real estate over the years and continued to do so up until his death.

Mike loved his family. Mike was at his best when he was surrounded by family, especially at Christmas time, which held a special place in his heart. He also loved football, especially the Mahnomen Indians and the Minnesota Vikings, hunting, yard work, and tinkering with engines and various things in his shop. When working on engines, there was very little the product "Sea Foam" couldn't fix. Mike also enjoyed volunteering for the Mahnomen Fire Department for 23 years.  He was a devout Catholic and claimed to have been inducted into the "Altar Boy Hall of Fame."  Mike also prided himself on being a "tough bohunk," which was a reference to his stoic nature and his Bohemian roots.

Mike is survived by his wife, Dianne; his children: Kimberly (Guy) Strandemo, Karen (Jason) McLennan, and Greg (Kristen) Liebl; his grandchildren: Thomas, Madeline, Sarah, and William Strandemo, Ava and Joseph McLennan, and Henry, Hannah, Whitney, and George Liebl; his siblings: Patricia Liebl, Ronald (Bonnie) Liebl, and David Liebl; his brother-in-law, Paul Christenson; and his nieces and nephew, Jennifer (Ray) Cook, Doug Liebl, and Martty (Tony) Trout. Mike is also survived by numerous relatives on Dianne's side of the family, who he considered his own.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Camilla Liebl; his sister, Corrine Christenson; and his nephew, Gary Liebl. Mike was also preceded in death by Clarence and Alice Neustel, Jerome and Shirley Kvidt, Cameron Agnew, Sonny Darco, and Dewey Kvidt.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, September 27, 2019 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen. A time of gathering will be held one hour before the service at the church.
