Vivian Hazel (Johnson) Hanson, age 92 of Ada, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Essentia Health in Fargo, North Dakota, following an unexpected illness.
Vivian was born on January 21, 1934, on the family farm near Ada, Minnesota in Norman County, where she grew up and went to school in Twin Valley, Minnesota. She was the youngest of six children born to George and Josephine (Pederson) Johnson. Vivian worked on the family farm and also cleaned for area families.
Vivian met her husband, Glen Hanson, and they were united in marriage on September 10, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church, in Twin Valley. They established a life in Ada, where they raised three children, and in 1957, her husband built their home. Vivian worked in area restaurants when they were first married. She was also active in the Ladies Auxiliary. Later, Vivian attended Dakota Business College in Fargo, North Dakota, and accepted a bank teller position with Ada National Bank in Ada, and became the head teller before retiring in 1996. After her retirement, she served as custodian at Grace Lutheran Church from 2001 to 2005, and she took on cleaning contracts with businesses and individuals until November of 2023.
Vivian enjoyed helping family and friends, and even people she barely knew, helping elderly people so they could stay in their homes. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, especially during the holidays, making lefse for Thanksgiving and Christmas, knitting and crocheting prayer shawls and baptismal shawls for her church, making Hardanger baptismal cloths and several Hardanger projects for family and friends, knitting and crocheting afghans, and gardening, including planting flowers in her flower bed so people could enjoy them when walking or driving by her house. Vivian would take in stray dogs and cats and provide a loving home for them. She enjoyed daily walks with her beloved cocker spaniel, Riley, and an occasional road trip to the DQ in Hawley, MN. She also valued friendship and company with members of Zion Lutheran Church of Ada, which was her adopted congregation. Most of all Vivian loved time with Glen, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vivian is survived by her children, Howard (Mary) Hanson, Watertown, MN, Keith (Estela) Hanson, Escondido, CA, and Elizabeth Vaughn, Ada, MN; six grandchildren, Joshua (Nikki) Hanson, Natane (Ryan) Bartholow, Cassandra (Brad) King, Phillip (Jami) Hanson, Jesselyn (Luis) Espinoza, and David (Ashley) Vaughn; eighteen great-grandchildren, Joshua Jr., Dylan and Shelby; Braiden, Broc, Aurora and Azalea; Katelyn and Kiersten; Luke, Mark and Ellie; Amelia and Andres; and Ashton, Grace, Paisley and Christian; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Albert Johnson and Norman Johnson; and sisters, Myrtle Minnie, Esther Kirkeby and Mabel Peppel.
