Virgil Kappes, age 90, of Waubun, MN, died on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen.
Virgil William Kappes was born June 18, 1930 at home on the farm near Wheatville, MN. He attended country school through the 6 th grade, before entering the workforce where he worked for area farmers. On April 30, 1955 Virgil was united in marriage to Lula Card in Pipestone, MN. The couple made their first home on the Kappes family farm, east of Borup, MN. In 1969, they moved into town where they owned and operated the Borup Grocery Store. In addition to being a meat cutter at the store, he was also employed at the Borup Public School as both a janitor and school bus driver. Over the years, he worked for Donald Holte as a farm laborer and custom combiner. Lula and Virgil moved east of Waubun in 1977 and built a Log Cabin, they truly enjoyed their time in the woods. They spent a lot of time on the lake fishing in the summer and winter. After their children were raised they started spending winters in Weslaco, TX and eventually moving there for many wonderful years. In 2019, Virgil moved back to Waubun and lived with his daughter, Virginia.
His hobbies were playing cards, especially pinnacle, and watching baseball. In his younger years, he enjoyed dancing to old time music, polkas, waltzes, and two-stepping.
Virgil is survived by one daughter; Virginia Kappes, of Waubun; five sons: Ralph (Sheila) of Ravensdale, WA, Frank of Hawley, Stuart of Pierson, IA, Mike (Vicki) of Waubun, and Jack (Jeanette) of Butte, MT; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; five brothers: Norbert of Minneapolis, MN, Russell (Inez) of Greenbush, MN, Chet (Barb) of Cass Lake, MN, Louis (Laurie) of Bemidji, MN, and Benno of Brainerd, MN; one sister, Dianne (Terry) Patterson of San Jose, CA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lula; and four siblings.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at Anderson Family Funeral Home, Mahnomen, MN. A time of gathering will take place one hour prior.
Following all Covid-19 safety protocols, social distancing will be practiced, and all must wear a mask to participate.
