Virgelia "Virgie"
Neisen
Nov 23, 1924 — Feb 11, 2025
Mahnomen
Virgelia 'Virgie' Marcella Neisen passed peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, February 11 in Fargo, ND at the age of 100.
Born November 23, 1924, to Frank and Agnes (Sedivy) Machulda, she grew up in rural Waubun Minnesota where she and her siblings attended a one-room school in Grove Township. During World War II, Virgie worked as a 'Rosie the Riveter' in Seattle, Washington and then returned home to Minnesota. On August 28, 1945, she married Elmer Neisen and together they raised seven children while farming in Rosedale Township, Mahnomen County, Minnesota. After the death of Elmer in 1986 she went to work at Mahnomen Health Center as a dietary aid and cook until the age of 84. As a woman of faith, she was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, participating in Ladies Aide, MCCL and Catholic Daughters.
Virgie, the beloved matriarch of five generations of family, and friend to many, will be remembered fondly. Virgie loved a good game of rummy, a delicious bowl of ice cream and sharing a home cooked meal with her family. Virgie's passion for a well-manicured lawn and beautiful flowerbeds were the envy of many, a legacy that she passed on to her family that will continue to blossom for generations to come.
Virgelia is survived by her daughters Marilyn (Kenneth) Blosberg, Cambridge, MN, Christine (Timothy) Neu, Great Falls, MT, Cathalene (Daniel) Lech, Fargo, ND and sons Allan (Dorothy) Neisen, Mahnomen, MN, and Philip (Jean) Neisen, Randall, MN, daughter-in-law, Barbara Neisen, twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and sister, Dorothy Becker.
In addition to her husband, Elmer, she is preceded in death by her parents, two sons, William and Charles and granddaughter, Angela Neisen, eight siblings, Edwin Machulda, Leonard Machulda, Angela Schouviller, Gladys Liebl, Margaret McCarthy, Helen Neubert, Rosella Aldrich and Deloris LaDuke.
