Victor Ness, 98, of Fertile, MN, died on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, MN.
Victor was born January 1, 1917, to Art and Caroline (Johnsrud) Ness at Maple Bay. He went to a country school in Maple Bay and later attended Fertile High School.
Then Pearl Harbor was attacked and suddenly the country was at war. Victor served with the 88th Division, 350th Infantry, known as the Blue Devils. Their insignia was a blue clover leaf and they fought like devils. The 350th Infantry Regiment fought in the Italian campaign. Victor was home on furlough when he and Bernice Iverson were married on December 17, 1943, at the Maple Bay parsonage. He went back to the Army for another two years. Victor was discharged from the Army on November 11, 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
After his discharge, Victor worked for Jerry Petersen in the repair and welding business. He eventually bought out the business and he and his brother, Wallace, operated Ness Repair Shop on Highway 32, on the north side of Fertile. He kept the shop until 1954, when he started farming. He and Bernice lived on a farm in Godfrey Township, where they raised three children. Victor was a lifelong member of Maple Bay Free Lutheran Church. He lived on the same farm until joining his wife at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in October, 2014.
Victor is survived by his wife, Bernice, Fertile, one son, Byron (Marilyn) Ness of rural Fertile, and one daughter, Gail (Jim) Weinkauf of Clear Lake; and one son-in-law, Wayne (Willi) Pederson, of Colorado Springs, CO; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
