Obituary

Vernon Ronald Anderson, age 78, of rural Waubun, MN, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 5, 2025, under the loving care of his family.

Vernon was born on July 30, 1947, in Park Rapids, MN, to Vernon and Genevieve (LaGue) Anderson. He grew up in the Tulaby Lake area, east of Waubun, where his deep connection to nature and the outdoors began. After attending Waubun High School, he went to work alongside his father in the family's lumber mill, traveling often to various logging camps across the region.  At the age of 17, Vernon met LaVonne "Bonnie" Colemer, and from that moment on, he knew she was the one. The very next day, he told Bonnie he planned to marry her, a promise he joyfully fulfilled on March 17, 1966. Together, they shared a beautiful 60+ year journey filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. Vernon and Bonnie shared 59 of those precious years, as husband and wife. The couple made their home near Tulaby Lake and raised three children, who would remain the pride and joy of Vernon's life.

Vernon spent much of his working life behind the wheel of a truck. He was employed by Anderson Sand and Gravel, Schoenborn Concrete, and Winter Truck Line, earning the CB handle "Flying Fin," a name that many still remember. Later, he joined Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, MN, serving as Assistant Manager of Facilities for 18 years. Even after retirement, Vernon rarely sat still. He was known for his inventive mind, his welding skills, and his ability to "build something out of nothing." Whether it was constructing docks for neighbors or fixing equipment, he was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Vernon was an avid gardener who delighted in sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He and Bonnie loved to travel, especially in their RV, and spent many weekends following their children's racing adventures. A passionate fisherman, Vernon cherished every chance to get a line in the water. He loved his annual fishing trips in Canda where he would spend weeks trying to get the biggest northern.  He also treasured his trips to Alaska and fishing at local lakes with family.  Above all, Vernon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was the center of his world, and he never missed a chance to be part of their lives. He had special place in his heart for dogs and always kept a loyal Labrador retriever by his side.  Vernon was a member of Elbow Lake Lutheran Church and proudly served with the Elbow Lake Fire Department for more than 20 years.

As his health failed, Vernon was able to remain in his home thanks to the loving support of his family. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Glen and Virginia Anderson for their devotion and care, as well as to the compassionate staff of White Earth Home Health, all of whom he loved like family.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Bonnie; one son, Chuck (Neily) Anderson; one daughter, Jennifer (Vance) Stevens; son-in-law, Craig Turner; a brother, Glenn (Virgina) Anderson; sister, Beverly (Glen) VanWert; 10 grandchildren: Michael Turner, Tyler Anderson, Cody Turner, Greg Anderson, Dustin Anderson, Lexi McDonald, Quintin Anderson, Grace Duel, Josie Stevens, and R.J. Anderson; and 13 great grandchildren: Keegan, Carter, Jerekai, Addison, Silas, Emri, Aubri, Camri, Dawson, Ava, Harley, Knox, and Brooks; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kim Turner; and brothers: Kenneth, Alvin, Boyd, and Larry.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the Elbow Lake Lutheran Church, rural Waubun.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at the Vernon Anderson Memorial Cemetery, rural Waubun.
