Watch Verna's Funeral Mass

Verna Bjerk, age 96, of Mahnomen, MN, died on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Verna G. Beck, the daughter of Jacob and Theresa (Mamer) Beck, was born on November 15, 1924, in St. Leo, MN.  As a child, her family moved often but lived much of their time in Graceville, Dumont, and Wheaton, MN.  In 1941, they moved to Mahnomen to make their home.  She attended school in Mahnomen, graduating with the class of 1942.  Verna then went to work at a military base in Spokane, WA, until returning home to the love of her life, Merlin Bjerk.  They were married in 1943 and began their family.  Verna was never intimidated by hard work and always kept busy.  As Merlin worked construction, Verna and the kids traveled with him for many years.  Merlin suffered a debilitating accident in 1969, after which Verna lovingly cared for him.  Over the years, she worked several jobs but often spoke of her time as a waitress and working in  the laundry department.  Verna proudly raised six children and always had a large garden.   She canned and made wonderful jelly's each year.  Verna dutifully cared for her flowers and enjoyed the natural beauty of the outdoors.  She also enjoyed bowling and crocheting.  Her beautiful afghans were a treasured gift to each of her grandchildren.  Merlin passed away in 1987, and Verna continued to make her home in Mahnomen where she was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.  She spent many hours volunteering at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home as well.  Verna treasured her family and made many memories with them over her blessed 96 years of life.

Verna is survived by one daughter, Beverly Huber of Fargo, ND; five sons: Ronald (Linda) of Mahnomen, Richard (Bonnie) of Mahnomen, Michael (Carol) of Mahnomen, Mark (Jane) of Glyndon, and Jeffrey (Anna) Waubun; one brother, William (Sharon) Beck of Spokane, WA; 16  grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one great granddaughter, Cadence; her parents; four brothers; and three sisters.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen, MN.  Visitation will be held Friday, November 20, 2020 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. and Rosary to follow.  Interment will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Mahnomen.

Following all Covid-19 safety protocols, social distancing will be practiced, and all must wear a mask to participate.
