Verla
Schoenborn
Sep 26, 1928 — Mar 27, 2023
Mahnomen
Verla Schoenborn, age 94, of Mahnomen MN died Monday, March 27, 2023, at Mahnomen Nursing Center, under the care of Hospice.
Verla Elaine was born to Otto and Mila (Fossen) Rogers on September 26, 1928, the baby of the family. She grew up on farms near Fossum and Waubun. She attended country school through 8 th grade. Verla worked as a nurse's aid from 16 years old. She spent time at Gillette Children's Hospital during the polio epidemic. Then worked at St. Mary's Detroit Lakes and the old Mahnomen Hospital in 1946. She met LaVerne Schoenborn at a dance at Flom Hall. They were married May 23, 1948, at Wild Rice Church. Their favorite pastime was going to dances anywhere from Roy Lake to Flom.
Soon after they were married, Verla began working for families, doing daycare and housekeeping in their homes. Some families were Dr. Danford, Dr. Gaucasana, Dr. Covey, and Brunsdales. In the 70s, Verla went back to work at Mahnomen Hospital. She worked as CNA and later in the cafeteria for about 20 years. When LaVerne retired in 1989, she also retired. They did a little traveling, including a trip to Arizona, a cruise to the Caribbean, and a flight to Alaska. But any call to adventure did not compare to their love for time with the grandchildren. Verla often called Darvin and Terry to ask if she could babysit, rather than the other way around. They followed the kids through all their high school activities and if they couldn't make the game, they listened faithfully to the radio.
Verla was a wonderful baker. She often tried out new recipes on LaVerne. She was very well known for Christmas cookies by the dozens. We once tried to count, but lost track after 1800. She had many tins of cookies available to distribute to family and friends. Verla also liked to embroider and garden. She especially enjoyed the quilting group at church, which she attended well into her 80s, when her fingers no longer could do the work. She was known for her wonderful Norwegian accent, and the fact that she could recite the birthday of almost every person she knew. Verla and LaVerne were faithful members of First Lutheran Church for 74 years, almost never missing a service to 2018, when they moved to assisted living.
Verla is survived by her husband of 74 years, LaVerne; one son Darvin, (Terry) Mahnomen; three grandchildren: Amanda (Mike) Grensteiner, Bismarck; Brent (Amber) Schoenborn, West Fargo; Chris (Stacey) Schoenborn, Fargo; six great-grandchildren, Brody, Landon, Ella, Eli, Ben, and Isabelle; In-laws, Donna Rogers, Delmar (Betty) Schoenborn, Joann Schoenborn, Pat Schoenborn, and many cherished nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers and spouses: Ray (Ardelle), William (Sig), Gilford (Dorothy), Earl (Loyal), and Philip; sisters and spouses: Ethel (Oris Morken), Alta (Ted Winter), Mavis (Everett Wermager); also Schoenborn in-laws: Wally (Mardelle), Lucille (Milo Winter), Marvin (Eleanor), Anthony, Sylvester.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on FRIDAY, APRIL 7, 2023 at the First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The Service will be recorded and posted.
