Val C.
Burslie
Sep 19, 1918 — Feb 11, 2014
Valborg "Val" Burslie, 95, of Fertile, MN, died on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile. Val was born on September 19, 1918, to Helmer and Christina (Neslund) Ostun in Liberty Township, rural Fertile. She was baptized and confirmed at Varnes Lutheran Church, rural Fertile. Val attended country school at Sunny Brook District 67, near her home. After her schooling she worked at Johnson's Café, in Fertile.
On September 30, 1942, Val was united in marriage to Larry Burslie in Fertile. She had worked at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. During World War II, she and Larry moved to Mt. Vernon, WA, returning to Fertile shortly before the end of the war. She worked as a tax accountant, a cook at the Top Notch Drive In, and with Larry at home in their tax and insurance office.
Val was a life-long member of Concordia Lutheran Church, where she served with the Altar Guild, Ladies Aid, Circle, and Fair Meadow Guild. She was also a member of the Fertile American Legion Auxiliary. Val was awarded Citizen of the Year in 1986.
Val was noted for her good cooking. She especially enjoyed sharing her lefsa, baking goodies, fudge and divinity candy with friends and neighbors. Always energetic, even into her late eighties she could be found outside blowing snow in the winter and manicuring her lawn in the summer. As she became older she could still be found volunteering at the Fair Meadow nursing home and helping those friends who were not as spry as she was.
She enjoyed visiting her family wherever they were stationed whether in Panama, Germany or on the East Cost. She and Fertile provided a stable home base while they were in the Army. She will be remembered by family and friends for her hospitality and generous spirit.
Val is survived by one son, Bruce Burslie, and her daughter-in-law Yolanda, Burke, VA, two grandchildren, Melissa (Keith) Talbot and Kristina (John) Culkin, four great grandchildren, Ethan and Lucila Talbot and Lorelei and Colin Culkin, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Larry, infant son Jason, and her sisters: Mildred Roragen, Signe Walters, Hilda Habedank, and Agnes Keith, and her brothers: Henry, Alfred, and William.
