Tyler A. Townsend, age 23, of Mahnomen, MN, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at the Mahnomen Health Center Hospital due to complications of a heart condition.
Tyler Andrew was born January 18, 1991, in Detroit Lakes, MN, the son of Karen Townsend and Damion Gullickson. He grew up in the Naytahwaush area where he attended school through the sixth grade. Tyler then went to Mahnomen High School. Following his schooling, Tyler and a couple of his cousins moved to Fergus Falls, MN, where they lived and worked for a time. He returned to the Mahnomen area and worked at the Shooting Star Casino in banquet setup. Tyler also worked as a seasonal worker for many years. He helped out at the traditional camps and in the fall he worked the sugar beet harvest.
As an outdoorsman, Tyler enjoyed being in the woods, hunting, fishing, ricing and leeching. He was laid back and rather quiet, until you got to know him. He loved to play basketball and horseshoes with friends and family. The most important things to Tyler were his daughters, the light of his life.
Tyler is survived by his girlfriend, Danielle Hanks, Naytahwaush, their children, Leenah and Lylah Townsend; his parents, Karen Townsend and Sam Ortley, Sr., of Mahnomen; his siblings, Chris Kier, of Naytahwaush, Sam Ortley Jr., Drucilla Ortley and Nonaleise Clark, of Mahnomen; grandmothers, Mary Ortley and Nona Townsend, of Mahnomen; his "other" parents, David and Susie Hanks of Naytahwaush, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bernard Clark, Frank Townsend Sr., and Sam Roberts; his brother, Deon Ortley; sister, Kelsey Hanks; and uncle, Franklin "Sonny" Townsend Jr.
A Traditional Native American Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2014, at the Naytahwaush Sports Complex in Naytahwaush, MN. An all-night wake will be held at the Sports Complex beginning at 5:00pm on Thursday, February 20, 2014 and will continue until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Island Lake Cemetery, rural Lengby, MN.
