Ted Andersen, 88, Beltrami, MN, died Thursday, November 11, 2010, at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, MN. Thorvald Dovrus ,"Ted", was born January 28, 1922, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Hans and Dorothy (Williams) Andersen. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1940. On September 26, 1942, Ted enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific at Saipan and Tinian during WWII and was honorably discharged on January 12, 1945. On May 16, 1946, he married Shirley Fritz from Bath, SD.
In 1951, they moved to Beltrami, MN, where he worked as manager of the Farmers Union Central Exchange LP gas plant. In 1958, Ted became the Cenex LP Department State of MN Supervisor. He also served as Mayor of Beltrami for 20 years. As mayor, he promoted getting city water installed in the city and helped promote establishing a community Fire Department. He was active in the United Methodist Church, Beltrami, for many years.
In his later years, Ted loved woodworking and, for many years, Ted and Shirley made craft items to sell at "Christmas in the Mall", in Beltrami, and to give as gifts to family and friends. He also loved to travel and visited every state in the union except Alaska.
Ted's open and friendly spirit became obvious when he greeted you with a hug. Often he would whistle loudly to let you know where he was, regardless of where you were. Ted loved spending time with family and friends and, in recent years, loved having his four great-grandchildren sit in his lap and share his M&M's and other candy with him.
Ted is survived by his wife: Shirley Andersen, Shelly, MN; children: Craig (Sonja) Andersen, Shelly, MN, Lynne (Mark) Gullickson, Fertile, MN, John (Darlene) Andersen, Wickenburg, AZ, and Kim (Jill Kuntz) Andersen, Beltrami, MN; six grandchildren: Nicolle (Dan) Richter, Fergus Falls, MN, Elise (Dan) Pforr, Fargo, ND, Laura Gullickson, Fertile, MN, Robert Andersen, Detroit Lakes, MN, John Gullickson, Fertile, MN, and Michael (Michelle) Gullickson, Fargo, ND; four great-grandchildren, Alex Rivard, Danica Pforr, and Ben and Jami Richter; step-brother, Ray (Gelene) Gullekson; two nieces, Laurie Andersen, Tucson, AZ, and Richelle (Tim) Bender, Snowflake, AZ.
