Flermoen
Jun 7, 1944 — Aug 29, 2021
Winger
Susan Flermoen, age 77, of Winger, MN, died Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Essentia Health in Fosston, MN.
Susan Kaye McWilliam was born June 7, 1944, in Fosston, MN, the daughter of John and Margrette (Hanson) McWilliam. She grew up south of Winger, where she attended grade school. Following one year of high school at Crookston School of Agriculture, Sue graduated from McIntosh High School with the class of 1962. She attended Mayville State University for one year then moved to Greeley, CO. After receiving her teaching certificate in May of 1966 from Colorado State College, she moved to Chicago, IL, to pursue her teaching career. On winter break in December of 1966, she was reacquainted with a local Winger boy, Orris Flermoen. The couple began dating and were united in marriage on July 7, 1968. They made their home in the Twin Cities Metro where Sue taught Jr. High Home Ec. After teaching for 35 years, she retired in 2000 and they moved to Winger in 2003. Sue and Orrie made their home together on the farm until Sue's health began to decline and she moved to the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine in 2018.
Sue will be remembered as a loving and caring individual who was known to always put others before herself. She gave much of her time and talents with those around her. Love God and Serve Others, was a motto Sue lived every day. She taught many, including her nieces how to sew. She enjoyed collecting turtle and pig memorabilia, peach and green glassware, old kitchen utensils, curtains, Longaberger baskets and anything blue! She also enjoyed bird watching, cooking, baking and gardening. Later in life, Sue liked spending time tending to her many potted flowers and the bountiful flower gardens and mowing the lawn at Oak Grove Farm, a home she loved. She also loved to slap white paint on fence rails, old steel wheels, the old outhouse with most of the time getting more than enough on everything including herself! She was a faithful and active member of Calvary Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid for many years. In her younger years, Sue played piano, helped on the farm and proudly raised and showed her hog which brought her a Grand Champion Ribbon at the Polk County Fair followed by a Blue Ribbon at the Minnesota State Fair, where she proudly paraded "Spectacular" through the grandstand with her hog cane. Above all, Sue loved her family, especially her devoted husband, Orrie. She was a dedicated caring friend to many and will be greatly missed by all and live on in their hearts forever.
Sue is survived by her husband of 53 years, Orrie of Winger; brother, Bruce (LaVonne) McWilliam of Winger; sisters-in-law, Darla McWilliam of Rindal, MN, and Betty Lou Myhrum of Thief River Falls, MN; stable mate, Kindi Hasbrouck of Fertile, MN; nieces and nephews: Stephanie (Kevin) Harvey of Craig, CO, Shelley Hagen of Denver, CO, Marissa (Karl) Donner of Winger, MarJenna (Brady) Koehler of Fargo, ND, David Myhrum of Winger, and Susan (Chris) Eischens of Newfolden, MN; and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jean; and a brother, Jan.
Blessed be the memory of Susan K. Flermoen.
