Stanley Hamernik, age 77, of rural Ulen, Minnesota, died in his home Sunday, December 30, 2007.
Stanley Joseph Hamernik was born March 20, 1930, the son of Frank and Aloise (Dvorak) Hamernik in Walworth Township, on the family farm. He was baptized at Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and confirmed his faith at Aspelund Lutheran Church, Flom, Minnesota. As a young boy he grew up on the family farm in section 9 of Walworth Township. He attended country school at District 54 and graduated with the class of 1949 from Ulen High School. Stanley entered the armed forces in 1951, serving his country during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge in 1955, Stanley farmed with his father for three years. On October 11, 1958, Stanley was united in marriage to Jean Matson at Jevnaker Lutheran Church near Borup, Minnesota. The couple took over the family farm where they milked cows, raised livestock and small grains. It was also here that they raised their family of six children, Kevin, Julie, Patty, Daniel, Stephanie and Jason.
Stanley served on the Walworth Town Board as clerk for 36 years, and was a charter member of the Flom Area Lions Club where he served as treasurer. He also served on the church council and was an active member of the Flom-Twin Valley VFW Post 3818. They retired from farming in 1997, rented out the farmland, and still reside on the home place. During his retirement years, Stanley enjoyed working part time for a neighboring farmer.
Stanley's hobbies included outdoor activities such a gardening and yard work. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, but Stanley treasured the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Stanley is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean of Ulen, MN; sons, Kevin (fiancé Feroll Haakenson) of Audubon, MN, Daniel of Glyndon, MN and Jason (Mandy) of Ulen, MN; daughters, Julie (Garrett) Thornton of Twin Valley, MN, Patty Boreen of Twin Valley, MN and Stephanie (Ryan) Olson of Ulen, MN; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank Jr. (Marlys) of Eagan, MN and Edward (Arlene) of Fridley, MN; sisters, Irene Klemetson of Ulen, MN, Betty (Robert) Baukol of Moorhead, MN, Helen (Marvin) Slette of Mahnomen, MN and Georgia (Carl) Fuchs of Fertile, MN; sister-in-law, Colleen Hamernik of Ulen, MN; brother-in-law, Harland Erickson of Detroit Lakes, MN and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jerry and two sisters, Anna Erickson and infant sister, Rose.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008, at 11:00 AM in Aspelund Lutheran Church, Flom, Minnesota. Visitation will be from 5PM until 7PM with a Prayer Service at 7PM in the Anderson Funeral Home, Twin Valley. Visitation will also be one hour before services at the church on Thursday.
Officiating will be Pastor Chad Peterson with Carol Johnson serving as organist and Mike Klemetson serving as vocalist. Pallbearers will be Roger Hamernik, Rodney Hamernik, Darin Erickson, Duane Erickson, Darrell Slette, Ron Klemetson and Matt Klemetson. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, the Flom Area Lions and the Walworth Township Board. Military honors will be provided by the Flom-Twin Valley Post # 3818 of the VFW.
Burial will be in Aspelund Lutheran Cemetery, Flom, Minnesota.
