Sophia A. Monson, 106, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 in the Twin Valley Living Center, Twin Valley, MN.
Sophia Amelia Monson was born July 12, 1903 the daughter of Sivert and Anna (Mikkelson) Anderson at Minneota, MN. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Norwegian Lutheran Church, now the Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota. She was raised in that community and graduated from the Minneota High School with the class of 1920. Sophia then attended Normal School, where she received her teaching certificate. She also took summer session classes at Moorhead Normal School, now Minnesota State University-Moorhead. She taught rural school in Lyon, Clay and Norman Counties in the 1920's, 30's and 40's.
On July 10, 1940 Sophia was united in marriage to Reuben B. Monson. They made their home in McDonaldsville Township near Ada, MN where they farmed. They lived there until 1977 when they retired and moved into Twin Valley, MN. After Reuben's death in 1987, Sophia moved into the Johnson apartments where she lived until 2005. She then moved into the Twin Valley Living Center where she lived until her death.
Sophia was a long time member of the West Wild Rice Lutheran Church and, at the time of its closing, she became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. In her younger years she was active in ladies aid functions at both churches. Sophia loved to crochet and made numerous afghans and doilies. Her friends and relatives are now enjoying the work of her hands.
Sophia is survived by one daughter, Corinne (Earl) Behrens, Moorhead, MN; three grandsons, Mark (Kimberly) Behrens, Moorhead, MN, Robert (Leta) Behrens, Longmont, CO, and Steven (Sarah) Behrens, Little Rock, AR; and three great grandchildren, Sophia, Brady and John. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben, twin daughters, Sharon and Sharlene, three sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 6th at 11:00 AM in Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church.
