Shirley
Hruby
Aug 6, 1944 — Jul 4, 2020
Audubon
Shirley Jean Hruby, age 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 4, after a lengthy illness.
Shirley Jean Skibicki was born August 6, 1944, in Thief River Falls, MN, the first of nine children to Jerome and Myrtle Skibicki. She grew up in Goodridge, MN, and attended school in Thief River Falls, graduating from Goodridge High School in 1962.
Shirley married Edwin Hruby in September 1964. They lived for a short time in Thief River Falls where she worked as a nurse's aide at Oakland Park Nursing Home. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1965 and then to Audubon in 1970 where they lived and raised their four children. Shirley worked for many years in the bakery at the Red Owl grocery store in Detroit Lakes and when it closed, she was employed with Lakeshirts until her retirement. In her spare time, Shirley baked and decorated cakes for all occasions for friends and family. She was active for decades in both the AuHa Homemakers Club and the Christian Women's group at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin, whom she has missed terribly since his passing in August 2019. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Jerome and Myrtle Skibicki, and one brother, Wesley. She is survived by her children: Brian (Julie) Hruby of Dalton, MN, Lisa (Troy) Simon of St. Paul, MN, Susie (Mike) Larsen of Mankato, MN, and Kristy (Dan) Anderson of Audubon; grandchildren: Mitchel (Becca) Hruby, Nathan (Megan) Hruby, Katie Mell, Ashley Mell, Maxx Larsen, Carter Anderson and Camryn Anderson; and her great grandchildren, Brody Hruby and Easton Hruby. She is also survived by her siblings: Gary, Steve, Evonne, Arlene, Duane, Dean and Connie, and their families.
A heartfelt thank you to her care team from Hospice of the Red River Valley and the entire staff at Pelican Landing, together who all made her final weeks more comfortable and peaceful. A special thanks for Father Bob LaPlante for his spiritual support, comfort, and friendship.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials may be sent directly to Hospice of the Red River Valley at 1701 38th Street South, Fargo, North Dakota 58103.
