Shirley
Hegg
d. Jul 3, 2026
Mahnomen
Shirley Hegg, age 85, formerly of Mahnomen, MN, died July 3, 2026, at Good Samaritan Society in Jackson, MN.
Shirley was born on August 15, 1940, at her aunt's home in Gary, MN, to David and Agnes (Jacobson) Stene. After Shirley's birth, the family moved to Halstad, MN where Shirley attended Halstad Public School through the 6th grade. Shirley and her family then moved to Twin Valley, MN, in 1952 where she attended 7-12th grade, graduating in 1958.
Shirley met Arlo Hegg at a dance at the "Flowing Well." She has said she knew right away he was the one! She said, "when you know, you know." On June 27, 1959, Shirley was united in marriage to Arlo at the Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley, MN. They had been happily married for 61 years and constant companions and caregivers to each other, until Arlo's passing in 2021.
Shirley worked for many years at the Red Apple Café in Mahnomen and then later at the Shooting Star Casino as a slot attendant, where she met many new people and friends. Over the years, Shirley also helped her Arlo with his business ordering parts and doing the billing.
Shirley's hobbies included bingo and making all kinds of crafts. She especially loved being outside. She looked forward to any time her family would come for a visit. Shirley had a strong faith in God and never missed church services either attending or listening on the radio. Shirley had many trials in life that should have tested her faith, but her faith never wavered. She was always a positive woman who never let life get her down.
Shirley is survived by her son, Ronald Arlo Hegg (Thomasina); her daughter, Barbara Jean Nascene (Kyle); her grandchildren: David Hegg, Jessica Verly, Oliver Hegg (Brenna Robertson), Alyssa McIntire (Zack) , Taylor Bainbridge (Jeff Miller), Nicholas Bainbridge (Victoria), Tiffany Karasek (Jonah), Carissa Nascene and Kylie Nascene; great grandchildren: Annabelle Hegg, Savannah Hegg, Nathan Wigmore, Avery Bainbridge, Atlas and Athena Bainbridge, August Bainbridge, Audrey Miller, Wesley Miller, Everleigh and Ariah Robertson and her sister, Linda (Richard) Olson.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, David and Agnes Stene; her husband, Arlo; a granddaughter, Stephanie Hegg; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Robert Nirschl; nephew, Matthew Olson; and several extended family members.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Mahnomen.
