Sheldon Edward Nygaard, age 89, of Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Waubun, MN, died Friday, January 18, 2008, at Innovis Heath Systems in Fargo, ND.

Sheldon was born September 1, 1918, in Ryder, ND, to Ole and Louise (Hanson) Nygaard. He grew up and began his schooling in Ryder and at the age of 11, moved with this family to the Waubun, MN, area, where he continued his schooling.

On May 2, 1957, Sheldon was united in marriage to Darlene (Shiek) in Moorhead, MN. The couple made their home in Moorhead for a short time before moving to the farm east of Waubun. Sheldon semi-retired from farming in 2002 and moved into Evergreen Village in Waubun. He moved to Lamplighter Manor in Detroit Lakes in 2003, where he lived until the time of his death.

Sheldon was a member of Lake Grove Lutheran Church, rural Waubun. He enjoyed going to dances on Sundays in Ottertail, MN. His favorite dance was the Polka. Sheldon also spent much time raising and caring for his horses. An additional hobby that kept him busy was buying and selling cars.

Sheldon is survived by two sons, Robert A. (Katie) Kind of Rush City, MN, and Louis O. Nygaard of Detroit Lakes, MN; three daughters, Carol D. (Kevin) Bice of Waubun, Nora S. (David Moore) Listul of Waubun, and Shelly K. Larson of Callaway, MN; two sisters, Helen (Louis) Drummond of Desert Hot Springs, CA, and Norma Nygaard of Detroit Lakes; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and his faithful dog, Max. He was preceded in death by his parents; best friend, Darlene, on October 1, 2002, and two sisters, Lilah Broulliard and Bernice Holcomb.
