Obituary

Scott Kemper, age 67, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Scott Richard Kemper was born September 10, 1956, in Detroit Lakes, MN, the son of Richard and Pearl (Moltzan) Kemper.  The family lived in Detroit Lakes and Scott attended Holy Rosary School.  Following the death of his father in 1964, Pearl married Richard's brother, James, and the family moved to the farm near Waubun, MN, in 1965.  Scott went to school in Waubun and graduated from Waubun High School with the Class of 1975.  Following high school, he attended the Vo-Tec in Detroit Lakes for small engine repair. Upon completing his certification, he made his home in Ada, MN, for a short time before relocating to Detroit Lakes.  Scott was united in marriage to Peggy Schermerhorn however, the two later parted ways. While living in Detroit Lakes, Scott worked at numerous jobs before his most recent employment with L & M Fleet Farm.  He retired in 2021 following 18+ years at L & M.  After retiring, he moved to Virginia Beach, VA, to be closer to his daughter, Brandy, but returned recently to the Detroit Lakes area.

Scott enjoyed the great outdoors and the activities it provided like fishing, shooting guns and hunting. He loved deer hunting every fall and treasured the memory of the big buck he shot.  He had a tremendous knife collection and proudly displayed many in his home. Scott was a friendly, outgoing individual and even though he often had no filter he was fun to be around and a great storyteller.  Above all his stories and work, Scott loved being around family and showing his love for animals, especially his dogs.

Scott is survived by a daughter, Brandy (Ronnie) Joyce of Virginia Beach, VA; a son, Sean Kemper of Detroit Lakes; six sisters: Pam (Bob) Broucek of Dayton, MN, Sue (Don) Jokumsen of Mahnomen, MN, Patti (Odin) Helgerson of Fargo, ND, Mary (Nancy Garza) Lindquist of Paige, TX, Jodi (Greg) Hutchinson of Billings, MT and Janet (Patrick) Showalter of St. Paul, MN; one brother, Steve (Kathleen) Kemper also of Fargo;  several nieces, nephews, cousins and his canine companion, Peanut.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Pearl; and his stepfather, Jim Kemper.
