Ruth M. Brakel, 86, Halstad, MN, died Thursday, March 10, 2011, at her residence.
Ruth Marvel Johnson was born on August 21, 1924, the daughter of Edwin and Mildred (Hildenbrandt) Johnson at Hurdsfield, ND. She attended Pleasant View Rural School, near her home, and Hurdsfield High School, graduating in 1942. Ruth continued her education at Valley City State University, Valley City, ND, graduating with a teaching degree in 1944. Ruth taught at Cathay and Bowdon, ND for two years each.
On June 21, 1948, Ruth married Ludy Brakel at Stanley, ND. Ruth taught at Tinta, ND, and they lived briefly in Stanley, ND, before moving to Halstad in 1953, where they raised their family and set down roots. Ruth and Ludy lived at the Halstad Telephone Company Quarters, where Ruth worked as a telephone operator. They eventually purchased a home and Ruth began working for the area grocery store in the early 1960's. Ruth worked at the store as a clerk until she was 84 years old, when the store was sold. Ludy died on November 3, 2007, and in August 2010, Ruth moved to Heritage Home.
Busy is a great word to describe Ruth. Whether she was baking, working, entertaining guests or just being around the house, Ruth kept busy doing productive and appreciated activities. She was a wonderful neighbor and friend who was always aware of things that might be needed and she enjoyed fulfilling those needs. Gardening flowers and vegetables was a way for Ruth to work with dirt, producing things she could share with others. Her grandchildren loved coming to her home and she loved to fuss over them. Ruthie will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Ruth is survived by a daughter, Vicki (Dan) Olson, Minneapolis, MN; a son, Dwight (Becky) Brakel, Eagan, MN; five grandchildren: Nicholas Brakel, Stephanie Brakel, Allison Berg, Maren Olson, AnnaLeah Olson; three great-grandchildren, Peyton and Ally Adams, and Violet Rain Berg; one brother, Edwin "Bud" (Verona) Johnson, Twin Valley, MN; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother, Duane
Funeral Service: 2:00PM Wednesday, March 16, 2011m at Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad, MN.
Visitation: 5-7PM Tuesday at Fredrikson Funeral Home, Halstad.
