Obituary

Ruth Basswood, age 31, of Virginia, MN, died on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Essentia Health- St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, MN.

Ruth LeAnna Basswood, Waabishkii-Binesii-ikwe, the daughter of Rebecca (Cyr) Hart and Robert Basswood was born September 10, 1994, in Detroit Lakes, MN.  Growing up, she attended school in Mahnomen and spent much of her youth on the farm with her grandparents, Urban and Doreen Jirik.  Urban and Doreen taught the girls many life lessons and good morals while allowing them to simply be kids.  Ruth enjoyed riding 4-wheeler, catching baby bunnies, and had a knack for rocking the chickens to sleep.  When they weren't at the farm, Ruth and her siblings could often be found in Naytahwaush making memories with their father, Jeff Coleman, and grandparents, Ronnie and Thelma Coleman.  As a young mom, Ruth was blessed with her daughter, Rylee.  Soon after, she moved with her mom to LeSeur, MN, to make their home and later she met Colin Crosby.  Together, Ruth and Colin would be blessed with five additional children and have made their home together in Virginia for the past eight years.  While living in Virginia, she worked as a housekeeper for a time, but her main focus was being a good mother to her children.  Ruth loved being a mom and her children were her everything.

Ruth enjoyed attending pow wows, listening to all genres of music and spending time with family and friends.  She was known to be a bit mischievous and somewhat of a terrorizer/instigator but she had a great big heart and loved fiercely.  When it came to family, there wasn't anything she wouldn't do for them, especially her children.  Although Ruth left this world too soon, she will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Ruth is survived by her children: Rylee, Reece, Remmie, Rayden, and Rizin; her significant other, Colin Crosby of Virginia; parents, Rebecca (Brian Lovejoy) Hart of Gilbert, MN, and Jeffrey (Dolly Beaulieu) Coleman of Naytahwaush; grandpa, Urban Jirik of Mahnomen; sisters: Kayla (Dustin Keezer) Coleman of Naytahwaush, Destiny (Daryl Moran) Coleman of Mahnomen, Jessica Coleman of Cass Lake, MN; Tiana (Thomas) Richotte of Perham, MN, and Indy (Darrell Fox) LaFriniere of Shevlin, MN; brothers: Randy (Samantha Fairbanks) Kettle, Bobby Kettle and Ramsey Kettle all of Pine Point, MN, Julian Beaulieu of Naytahwaush and Timothy LaFriniere also of Naytahwaush; several nieces, nephew, cousins and many aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her son, Reighn Crosby; sister, ShiAnn Coleman; grandma, Doreen Jirik; grandparents, Thelma and Ronnie Coleman; father, Robert Basswood; aunt, Shirlene Wakemup; nephew, Keith Richotte; cousin, Wayne Goodman; grandpa, Edmund Cyr and grandparents, Richard and Mary Basswood.
