He grew up and attended county school in the Gary, Minnesota, and Lockhart, Minnesota, areas. Russell was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Grace Lutheran Church in Ada, MN. At the age of 16, Russell enlisted with the United States Army where he served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater. A short time later, they moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota where Russ began racing stock cars. In the late 1950's, the family moved to the Gary area and began farming. For many years, Russell farmed and raised cattle. He also continued to do mechanic work as well. In the late 70's, Russell added specialized beefalo to the ranch and cared for a herd for many years. Upon their retirement, Russell and Janice spent a winter in Oregon before moving into the town of Halstad to make their home. Russell recently entered the Villa St. Vincent due to his failing health.
