Russell McNiff, age 75, of Ogema, MN, died Saturday, April 14, 2007, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen, MN.
Russell Neil McNiff was born February 8, 1932, the son of Francis and Wilma (Worth) McNiff in Minneapolis, MN. As a child, he lived in White Earth, MN, and later at his grandparent's farm near Mille Lacs, MN. Russell then moved backed to the Minneapolis area and attended school in Columbia Heights, MN. In the late 1940's, Russell entered the United States Navy where he served several years as a boiler technician on the USS Midway in the Mediterranean. Upon his discharge, Russell returned to the Minneapolis area, where he met and married Beverly Sveum. To this union they were blessed with five children. The couple relocated to Deer River, MN, where Russell began working on his family's mink farm. He later became employed in the mines of the Northern Minnesota Iron Range. After a time, Russell began driving truck and moved back to Minneapolis. He continued driving for several years, hauling heavy equipment to the Southern states. In the late 1970's, he moved to Las Vegas, NV, and provided security at the Frontier Casino. Russell was united in marriage to Ginger Scott and soon after began working for his brother, Bill, at the "Shine Shop" in Las Vegas. In 2005, Russell decided to move back to Minnesota and reside with his sister, Nancy, in Ogema. Due to failing health, he recently entered the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Russell greatly enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. He was an avid airplane enthusiast who piloted his planes whenever he was able. In his later years, Russell spent many hours building and flying model remote airplanes.
He is survived by four sons: Rusty and Steve both of Grand Rapids, MN, and Mike and Greg both of Hibbing, MN; one daughter, Lisa of Hibbing; two sisters, Nancy Clark of Ogema and Marvel Gustason of Minneapolis, MN; and one brother, Bill McNiff of Las Vegas, NV.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Beverley; and one brother, Gary.
