Obituary

Roy "Boise" Smith, age 74, of Waubun, MN, died Tuesday, August 4, 2020, peacefully on his farm.

Roy George Smith was born August 7, 1945, to Archiebald "Red" and Erma (Malakowsky) Smith on the family farm in Waubun, MN. After the passing of his father, Red, in 1946, Erma remarried Vernon Smith on November 10, 1956. With this union, two families became one with the addition of brothers and sisters: Janet Cogger, Doris Blair, Bertha Santwire, Virginia Greminger, Darwin Smith, Burton Smith, Donna Faulkner, Norma Burnette, Dorothy Jenny, and Barbara Toczek.

Roy grew up with the joy of farming in his blood and family was very important throughout his life. Roy married Fay Ann Bice on August 21, 1965. They were blessed with four children: Rhonda, Christopher, Brent and Amanda.

Early in their marriage, Roy and Fay Ann made their home in Elk River, MN, where Roy worked for Elk River Concrete. He then made a job switch to Otis Elevators while also working for his brother-in-law, Gary Santwire. On the weekends, Roy still made the haul back to Waubun to plant and harvest the crops.

After seven years of this lifestyle, Roy and Fay Ann made a permanent move back to the family farm in Waubun where he started milking cows full time. In addition to milking, Roy also worked a full-time job at Dynamic Homes in Detroit Lakes, MN. He later transferred to Hill Construction also located in Detroit Lakes. Roy retired from milking in 1999 and fully retired at the age of 65 but continued to keep himself busy while working for H & R Construction. Roy and Fay Ann decided to respectfully part ways after many years of marriage.

After retirement, Roy enjoyed the simple, calming life on the farm. His hobbies included gardening, barnyard golf, taking trips around the farm on the gator as well as tending to his hobby farm. When Roy wasn't enjoying one of these activities, you could always find him sitting in the garage on his chair with a cold beer in his coozy taking in the views. However, his greatest joys were his children, 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He always loved spoiling the grandchildren and watching them grow up.

Roy's fondest memories were hunting with John Grise, farming with Leonard Ahles, Ted and David Green and snowmobiling with Jim Blair.

Roy is survived by his children: Rhonda (Kurt) Pahlen, Crookston, MN; Christopher Smith, Frazee, MN; Brent (Lesa) Smith, Mahnomen, MN; and Amanda (John Jr.) Jaeger, Waubun, MN; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet (Darwin) Cogger, Strawberry Lake, MN; Doris Blair, Milwaukee, WI; Bertha Santwire, Elk River, MN; Virginia (Jeff) Greminger, Rochert, MN,  Barbara (Kenny) Toczek, Cle Elum, WA; brother, Darwin Smith, Detroit Lakes, MN; and brother-in-law, Dennis Jenny, Lake Havasu, AZ.

Roy was proceeded in death by his parents, Erma and Archiebald "Red" Smith; step-father, Vernon "Whitey" Smith; grandson, Joshua Allen Smith; sisters: Dorothy Jenny, Donna Faulkner and Norma Burnette; brother, Burton Smith; brothers-in-laws: Jim Blair, Leslie Faulkner and Marvin Burnette; and grandparents, Anna and George Malakowsky.

Private Services will be held on Friday, August 7, 2020.
