Obituary

Roland Vanderplaats, age 79, of Bejou, MN, died Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Heathers Hospice House, Fargo, ND.

Roland Edward, the son of Edward and Katherine VanderPlaats, was born on July 7, 1947, in Bejou, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm, along with his cousin, Agnes, and several foster children, who were welcomed into their home as part of his family. Roland graduated from Mahnomen High School with the class of 1965. He went on to attend business college for two years before returning home to the family farm. Later, he proudly answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. Roland was deeply proud of his country and of the time he spent serving in the military. Throughout his life, Roland faced his share of challenges, meeting them with determination. He was a down-to-earth and practical man who lived life on his own terms. He had a big heart and a particular concern for those who were often overlooked, always willing to look out for the underdog. In addition to running the farm, Roland enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, spending time outdoors, and enjoyed riding his Harleys. He was also an avid handloader and took pride in making his own ammunition. He appreciated the freedom of the open road and the independence that came with it. Family was important to Roland, and he shared a particularly close bond with his parents. He cared for them and was there for them throughout their later years. He also felt a strong connection to the Native culture and people of the White Earth Reservation and held a deep respect for his elders and the wisdom they carried.

Roland was a man who could be both tough and tender, independent yet deeply caring. He lived a full life, made his own way, and remained true to himself. Those who knew him will remember his generous heart, his practical nature, his loyalty to those he cared about, and his willingness to stand up for someone who needed a friend. Roland will be remembered and missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched along the way.

Roland is survived by his extended family, and fellow Vietnam Veteran brothers from the 118th Assault Helicopter Company from Bien Hoa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Katherine; special cousin, Agnes Halvorson; and many aunts, uncles and extended family.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Anderson Family Funeral Home in Mahnomen, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial and military honors will follow at the Bejou City Cemetery in Bejou.
