Obituary

Roland Maynard Johnson, 78, Halstad, MN, died Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at his home.. He was born on February 20, 1933, to George and Olga (Engen) Johnson at Halstad. Roland attended Halstad High School, before working at Aarestad Potato Farms. Roland entered the United States Army 1952, serving in Korea until 1954. He was honorably discharged and returned to home to Halstad.
On September 1, 1956, he was united in marriage to Stella Yvonne Thompson at Hendrum. They lived in Hendrum, MN for a couple of years, while Roland worked for the Red River Coop Power. He transferred to Fisher, MN and returned to Halstad in the early 1960's. Roland continued to work at the Red River Coop Power until retiring in February of 1995. Following retirement Roland worked with the Halstad Municipal Utilities part time for a few years.
As a lifelong member of Halstad Lutheran Church, Roland was active in custodial care for 11 years. He and his family kept the church clean and ready for worship service and activities. Over the years, he enjoyed helping the local farmers with their harvest. Roland was a member of Carlson-Hellerud American Legion and the Halstad Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years.
Roland was a quiet man and when he spoke up what he said had a lot of meaning. He was also generous and caring to all he met, but especially to his children. Roland was a "huge" fan of the Minnesota Vikings, even when they were having a poor season. Fishing at the lakes with family and friends was a fun past time. Teaching his children and grandchildren how to properly care for things meant a great deal to him. He was devoted in a quiet way to God, the church, and his family.
Roland is survived by his wife, Yvonne, Halstad; two daughters: Terri (Jay) Lee, Coeur d'Alene, ID and Patti (Greg) Warnecke, Halstad, MN; four sons: Jeff (Marie), Rice, MN; Steve (Danielle), Billings, MT; Cary (Davi), Fargo, ND; and Doug (Laura), Big Lake, MN; 17 grandchildren: Leah (Travis) Johnson, Robyn Stoller, Shannon (William) Barlow, Ashley (Josh) Essig, Bridget Johnson, Kirby Lee, Derrick Warnecke, Michael Warnecke, Sydney Johnson, Haley Warnecke, Josh Johnson, Melissa Johnson, Jordan Johnson, Jenna Johnson, Eric Johnson, Kristen Johnson and Joel Johnson; two sisters: Alma Holm, Halstad; and Lois (Bob) Ackerman, Brooklyn Park, MN; several nephews and nieces. He was preceded by his parents, five brothers: Art, Ralph, Leland, George Jr, and Kenneth; three sisters: Ruth Steffes, Janice Annis, Gladys Ingberg.
