Roger John Sahli was born March 15, 1940 in Hankinson, North Dakota to John and Helen (Schatz) Sahli. His childhood years were spent growing up in towns in both North and South Dakota. In the mid 1950's, his family moved to the Minneapolis, Minnesota area where Roger would attend his last three years of high school. After graduation, he began working for a steel company, beginning as a welder and later becoming a machine maintenance worker.
On August 18, 1972, Roger was united in marriage to Virginia Jacobson Martin in Osseo, Minnesota. The couple made their home in the St. Michael/Albertville, Minnesota area where Roger continued to work in the maintenance division. Following his retirement in 1996, Roger and Ginny relocated to their home on Snider Lake, where they have lived since. Roger died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 24, 2010 in his home at the age of 69.
Roger spent countless hours in the woods: hunting, fishing and four wheeling. He had a true passion for the outdoors in general and loved living at the lake. He also spent numerous hours hot air ballooning in his younger years. Roger enjoyed playing cards and could be found helping friends and neighbors out whenever he could. He was"Mr. Fix It", always tinkering in the shop and inventing some new gadget. Roger was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun.
Roger is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ginny, Waubun, Minnesota; a son, Richard (Jan) Sahli, Miltona, Minnesota; two daughters, Judi (Marc Hallett) Berglin, Colfax, Wisconsin, and Susan (Kevin) King, White Haven, Pennsylvania; two step-sons, Bradford (Christine) Martin, Rollingstone, Minnesota and Barry Martin, Monticello, Minnesota; seven grandchildren: Wil Taft, Curt Sahli, Mathew Sahli, Joshua Martin, Colin Martin, Tegan Martin and Adam Martin; one brother, Ervin (Norma) Sahli, Fridley, Minnesota; three sisters: Virginia Hartley, Maple Grove, Minnesota, Dolly (Pete) Schmitz, Burnsville, Minnesota and Linda (Leo) Elkie, St. Michael, Minnesota; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Sahli, Bismarck, North Dakota and Rita Sahli, Red Wing, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jerome and Virgil Sahli.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 29th at 11 am at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Waubun, MN. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 28th from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm at the Anderson~Mattson Funeral Home in Mahnomen. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the church.
Services will be led by Father Bob Leising, O.M.I. Special music will be provided by Monica Winter. Serving as pallbearers are Max Voss, Jeff Sahli, Curtis Sahli, Mathew Sahli, Dennis Buschette, and Leslie Jacobson. Honorary bearers included Barry Martin, Wil Taft, Josh Martin, Colin Martin, Tegan Martin and Adam Martin.
Entombment will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Alexandria, MN, on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 2 pm.
