Obituary

Robert Everette Visser, the eldest of six sons born to Gust and Esther (Merkins) Visser, came into this world on July 31, 1934 in Ada, MN.

Robert grew up in Norman County where he attended Ada School and graduated in 1952. He kept busy with various jobs all throughout his life but loved farming the most.  He proudly enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1958.  In 1962, Bob began serving full time as a mechanic in the guard, first in Detroit Lakes, MN and then in St. James, MN.  On June 30, 1962, Robert was united in marriage to Margaret Joan Chmelar.  In 1965, he took his wife and two young sons back to Ada and returned to farming.  He also worked in carpentry for Warren Lively and later Great Plains.  For a time, Bob was employed at the Wagner sawmill.  In 1989, he officially retired from the National Guard, after 29 years of service.  In March of 1992, he became part owner of the Kegler Lanes Bowling Alley in Twin Valley, which he operated until September 2004.  After one short idle winter, he began working at Titan Machinery the next spring.  Bob officially retired on his 80 th Birthday in 2014.

Bob was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ada where he was active with the Knights of Columbus.  Over the years, he served on the church council, was a eucharistic minister, an usher, and taught CCD.  Bob was also a member of the American Legion.  Bob was a proud father of six children and his wife of nearly 58 years. He loved to travel and made wonderful memories in Branson, Nashville, and Dollywood.  He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about the outdoors, especially through his camping and fishing experiences.

In 2010, Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson's. After falling and breaking his hip in 2017, he entered the Benedictine Care Community where he made his home for two years and seven months.  Bob passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of 85, on February 1, 2020.

Bob is survived by his wife, Margaret Joan; his children: John (Teresa) Visser of Smithwick, SD, Mark (Renee) Visser of Twin Valley, Debra (Mike) Hagy of Twin Valley, Dean (Briana) Visser of Pequot Lakes, MN, Ann Miller of Ada and Bobby Visser of Ada; eleven grandchildren: Austin (Sheridan) Visser of Reeder, ND, Jacob (Rachel) Visser of Grand Forks, ND, Shawn Visser of Grand Forks, David Visser of West Fargo, ND, Tyler (Ellen) Bueng of Twin Valley, Tate Bueng of Twin Valley, Alexis (Greg) Gerst of Hooper, UT, Ryan Visser of Pequot Lakes, Riley Miller Logan Miller and Julia Miller, all of Ada, MN; and his special family: Scott Stene, Tammy Stene, Lindsey Stene, Allison Stene, and Matti Stene; and two brothers, James and Earl Visser; two brothers-in-law, Ron and John; and six sisters-in-law: Katie, Mary, Linda, Phillis, Marlys, Donna, and Shirley; and many nieces and nephews.
