Robert A. Thompson
Robert Arland Thompson, 86, Halstad, Minnesota, died Monday, August 30, 2010, at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.
Robert was born on January 8, 1924, in Osakis, MN, to Ella Owens Thompson and Truman Thompson. He graduated from Warren (MN) High School in 1941. Robert worked in the CC Camps and as a ship fitter in the Swan Island Shipyards in Portland, OR, building Liberty ships. He worked in the Navy yard in Bremerton, WA as an electrician during World War II. He later earned his masters electrician license and had his own business, Thompson Electric in Halstad and Argyle. He worked for a while as a state electrical inspector for the city of Fargo. He then went back to private contracting. After he retired from contracting, he accepted a position as the Moorhead Area Vo Tec School as an electrical instructor. He greatly enjoyed working with first and second year vocational students until colon cancer caused him to retire in 1989. By this time he had taken many college courses and earned his bachelors degree.
Robert met, fell in love with, and married Doris Parent in 1943. They had three sons and one daughter. Robert enjoyed fishing and traveling with his wife and children. Robert and Doris were members of the Holy Family Catholic church in Halstad. Robert is survived by his children, James (Jill) Thompson, John Thompson, Donald Thompson, and Joan (Roger) Holland, two sisters, JoAnne (Wes) Fossum and Donna Jean (David) Lee, one granddaughter, Suzette (David) Holland Hayes, two great grandsons, Hudson Hayes and Bennitt Hayes, and many other loving family members. Roberts was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, brother, Thomas Thompson, and his parents.
Memorial service: 11:00AM Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Holy Family Catholic church, Halstad, MN, with visitation for one hour before the service.
