Robert H. Leslie, age 71, of Mahnomen, MN, died Saturday, August 18, 2012 in the Twin Valley Living Center.
Robert Leslie, the son of Raymond and Agnes (Wolbeck) Leslie, was born December 12, 1940 near Mahnomen. He was raised on a farm southwest of Mahnomen and attended school in Mahnomen. After graduating from Mahnomen High School with the class of 1958, Bob entered the United States Army. While in the Army, he was stationed overseas for over a year before an honorable discharge in 1961. Bob returned to the Mahnomen community until July of 1962 when he was reactivated into the service. He again returned to Mahnomen and began working in construction. On August 21, 1965 Robert was married to Dorine Kaster in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beaulieu, MN. They made their home east of Mahnomen while Bob continued to work in construction. After a few years, he worked for the St Pier Ranch Southeast of Mahnomen followed by a ranch in Wisconsin. In 1974, the family returned to Mahnomen and Bob began driving truck for Thorson Construction. For health reasons, he retired in the early 1990's. During retirement, Bob continued to make his home east of Mahnomen and remained active helping friends in need. He spent many hours gardening, mowing the Bejou Cemetery, and making baby quilts for female veterans and lap blankets for patients at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Bob was an avid hunter and outdoorsman; happiest when he was outside and enjoying nature and even happier if he could be teaching his children and grandchildren all he knew about hunting, trapping and fishing. He raised countless turkeys, geese and pheasants, releasing them all back into the wild in an effort to grow their populations in our area.
Bob held memberships with the Bejou VFW, Moorhead American Legion, 40 and 8 and also a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club.
Robert is survived by one daughter, Brenda (Doug) Schoenborn, Mahnomen; two sons, Brian (Brenda Hickman) of Mahnomen and Bert (Kristi Korinta) of Twin Valley, MN; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Janice Bailey of Erskine, MN and Linda (Ron) Bjerk, of Mahnomen; four brothers: Raymond "Butch" (Helen), Steve (Stella) and Richard all of Mahnomen and David (Elaine) of Hibbing, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorine; an infant son, Joseph John; two brothers, John and Patrick and one sister, Jeanette.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August, 25, 2012 at 11:00am in the St Joseph's Catholic Church, Beaulieu, Minnesota. A time of gathering will be one hour before services.
