Robert Hanson, age 91, of Mahnomen, MN, died on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at the Twin Valley Living Center, Twin Valley, MN.

Robert Frank Hanson was born to Merwyn and Esther (Swanson) Hanson on March 2, 1927, in Fargo, ND.  Robert was raised in Mahnomen and attended school in Mahnomen through his freshman year. He attended his last three years of high school at St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, WI, graduating in 1945. Robert worked in a defense plant for a few months before being drafted into the United States Army in August of 1945. After proudly and faithfully serving his county, he earned an honorable discharge in March of 1947.

Robert attended his first year of College at Concordia in Moorhead, MN. On May 7, 1949, Robert married Jean Marie Bjerken. The couple lived in Mahnomen for one year while Robert worked at the First National Bank, before returning to college at UND in Grand Forks, ND, graduating in 1952. The couple moved back to Mahnomen in 1952 and Robert continued his career at the First National Bank, becoming the bank Vice President 1961. He also sold insurance privately while employed at the First National Bank. Robert and Jean were blessed with five children: Stephen, Gary, Diane, Paul and David. The couple raised their family in Mahnomen and were always actively involved in the community. Robert retired from fulltime employment at the bank in 1992 but continued to work for the bank part time until 1997, when he fully retired in January.

Robert enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, stamp collecting, watching movies, going for walks, and traveling. He was also actively involved in the First Lutheran Church where he served as Secretary Treasurer and was on the Board of Trustees for six years. Robert was a member of the American Legion Post #31, the Masonic Lodge of Detroit Lakes, Mahnomen Golf Club, serving as secretary and president, and was a Cub Master with the Boy Scouts for four years. Robert will be missed in the community and by all who knew and loved him

Robert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jean of Mahnomen, MN; his children: Stephen (LuAnn) Hanson of Park Rapids, MN, Gary (Nancy) Hanson of El Paso, TX, Diane Hanson of Aberdeen, WA, Paul (Rhonda) Hanson of Chandler, AZ, and David Hanson of Mahnomen, MN; his brother, James (Angie) Hanson of Burnsville, MN; his sister-in-law, Ethel Hanson; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Merwyn and Esther; his brother, Leslie; 3 sisters: Jean, Muriel and Ann; and 2 nephews: Howard and Harley.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen, MN.  Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be held in the First Lutheran Church cemetery.
