Rick
Samuelson
Dec 21, 1951 — Nov 29, 2025
Rick Samuelson, age 73, of Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Twin Valley, MN, died on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.
Rick Allen Samuelson was born on December 21, 1951 and grew up in Ada, MN. He was the only child of Wayne and Marceline "Marcy" (Ambuehl) Samuelson. Raised close to his grandparents and extended family, Rick developed an appreciation for family and remained especially close to his parents throughout his life.
He graduated with honors as salutatorian of his class from Ada High School and went on to attend Minnesota State University–Moorhead, where he earned bachelor's degrees in chemistry and German, frequently making the dean's list. During his time there, he was involved with several of the chemistry and German clubs and was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma fraternity.
Following college, Rick built a long and accomplished career in chemistry and science. He spent many years with General Mills in Minneapolis, MN, working as a senior research information scientist. Over the course of his career, he also completed patent work and consulting for several companies, living all over the country, including Ohio, Illinois, and Arizona.
Rick loved to travel, both in the United States and Europe. An avid photographer, he captured striking images of landscapes and architecture. He was especially drawn to the desert beauty of Arizona with the cactus-filled horizons and warm southwestern colors. That appreciation was reflected in the decor of his Detroit Lakes apartment, which echoed those desert tones.
In early retirement, Rick returned to Twin Valley to care for his parents during their declining health. After his mother's passing, he reentered the workforce as a bartender at the Shooting Star Casino and earned another bachelor's degree in hotel, tourism, and restaurant management from University of Minnesota–Crookston. Rick later made his home in Detroit Lakes, where he enjoyed new friendships and an active community life.
Rick leaves behind extended family and many dear friends.
A time of gathering will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 2:00pm at the Becker County Museum in Detroit Lakes. Burial will be held at a later date. In memory of Rick, please wear colorful clothing to the gathering. He was especially fond of Hawaiian shirts!
