Richard "Dick" Orvis Berhow, 79, of Fertile, MN, died on May 6, 2014, at his home.  He was born on May 25, 1934, to Emmet and Olive (Alm) Berhow at their home in Garden Township, rural Fertile.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Maple Lake Lutheran Church, near his home.  Dick attended country school until 8th grade and graduated from the Fertile High School in 1952.  On November 19, 1954, Dick entered the United States Army.  He served as a radio operator in Korea.  On November 18, 1956, he was honorably discharged and returned home.  Dick purchased the family farm where he milked cows at Grade A level.

On July 16, 1960, Dick was united in marriage to Yvonne Baatz at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Mentor, MN.  They were blessed with five children: Ann, Joe, Carol, Judy, and John.  In 1970, Dick began Berhow Plumbing and Heating.  In 1982, he earned his "Master Plumber License".  Dick continued to provide plumbing and heating services until he could no longer do so.  He served on the County Committee (formerly the ASCS committee) for 9 years and the Garden Township Board.  At St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dick was a member and served as usher, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and men's guild.

Dick enjoyed life and cherished his wife Yvonne and his family and friends.   He was proud to have 120 first cousins and enjoyed his family heritage and traveling to family reunions to visit with his relatives.  When it came to sports, Dick especially liked to watch the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings.  He also thoroughly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play.  He hunted water fowl, upland birds, deer, elk and moose and loved to go fishing, especially spearing Whitefish!!  His hunting and fishing trips covered MN, MT, ID, ND, IA, MI, AK and Canada.  He loved to read and enjoyed his vegetable garden and flowers of all sorts.   He always loved his dogs and trips to the Dairy Queen.  It was always a beautiful day for a drive (regardless of the weather) and he traveled to all 50 states as well as Canada, South America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Islands.

Dick is survived by his wife, Yvonne, Fertile; children: Ann (Jaysen) Nephew, Fertile; Joseph (Lisa), Alvarado, MN; Carol (Bruce) Cameron, East Walpole, MA; Judy Berhow, St. Paul, MN; and John (Kari), Fertile; five grandchildren: Andrew Nephew, Christopher, Brian, and Nathan Cameron, and Nicole Nugent; one great-grandchild, Greyson Nugent; three sisters-in-law: Ora Berhow, Wisconsin, Lorraine Berhow, Fertile, and DeVonna Berhow, Erskine; many cousins, nephews and nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers and sisters: Myrl Moland, Verna Rasmussen, Robert Berhow, Stanley Berhow, Cyril Berhow, Virgil Berhow, and Donald Berhow.

Funeral mass will be on Monday, May 12, 2014, at 2:30 PM in the St Joseph Catholic Church Fertile, MN.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 11, 2014, from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fertile, MN.

Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Fertile, MN.
