Obituary

Richard F. Broers, 67, Twin Valley, Minnesota, died Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Sanford Palliative Care, Fargo, ND.

Richard Frank Broers was born July 25, 1947, to Frank and Ruth (Rinerson) Broers of Twin Valley. Richard grew up on the family farm outside of Twin Valley, and graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1965. Richard enlisted in the United States Army in November of 1966. He served as a medic specialist and earned the National Defense Service Medal and Rifle Marksman Badge. He was honorable discharged in 1968 and continued in the reserves until 1972.

During his time in the Army he met a civilian nurse, Catherine Mulvihill, who became "The best thing that ever happened to him". Richard and Catherine were married on April 19, 1969, in Yonkers, NY. They made their home just miles from the Broers homestead in Twin Valley and spent 46 blessed years together.

Richard farmed since he was a young boy until 1978, when he started working for Burlington Northern Sante Fe. Though quiet to many, Richard was a jokester with a love for the farm life and enjoyed deer hunting with his sons and relatives. His passions included: music, The Righteous Brothers and other oldies, his Allis Chalmers tractors, his love of Corvettes including his '78 Silver Anniversary Corvette.

He passed along his love for tinkering on the farm and welding to his son Lonnie, spending time welding loader buckets and snow blowers together. Richard enjoyed conversations with Chisum discussing the events around the world. Richard and family also enjoyed the years spent in Boys Scouts with Chisum. He also enjoyed visits from his granddaughter, Meredyth, who is the next generation jokester. He passed on his love of humor to his daughter, Catherine, who he was still reminding to "check her oil" and enjoyed their 4-wheeler rides and leaving her in the dust. He retired in 2007 from Burlington Northern Sante Fe. His bright smile shared with a select few and strong supportive hands will be missed.

Richard is survived by his wife, Catherine, Twin Valley, a daughter: Catherine Broers, of Moorhead, MN, sons: Lonnie Broers, of Hawley, MN and Chisum Broers and granddaughter, Meredyth, of Vermillion, SD, Aunts: Delores Winters of Mahnomen, MN and Verie Zillmer of Staples, MN, and uncle Butch (Janice) Broers of Mahnomen, MN, sisters Faye Naugle of Park Rapids, MN and Arlene Korsgaden of Twin Valley, MN, and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind man's best friend, Fritz. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and sister, Jan Harris, along with man's best friends Stormy, Hundt and Baron.
