Twin Valley
Watch Piano Dedication Ceremony
Renae Hoekstra, age 71, of Twin Valley, MN died on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Serenity Memory Care in Dilworth, MN.
Renae Alice Johnson, the daughter of Mervin and Clarice (Brateng) Johnson, was born on March 31, 1947 in Grand Forks, ND. She spent her childhood in Grand Forks, until moving to Twin Valley as a young teenager. Renae attended high school in Twin Valley and worked as a waitress at the South Side Café, which her parents owned. After graduating in 1965, she attended Interstate Business College. On June 17, 1966, Renae was united in marriage to Dennis Hoekstra at Zion Lutheran Church, and the couple made their lifelong home in the Twin Valley area. In 1969, they built a cabin on Tulaby Lake where they spent much of their time together. Renae worked for a few years as a secretary for the Twin Valley High School before beginning her family. Dennis and Renae were blessed with three daughters: Shelly, Kristen, and Marti. In the late 1970's Renae began teaching piano lessons. She faithfully taught many young people the gift of music, in both the Twin Valley and Gary public schools, for her entire career. Renae was also part owner of "Flowers and Spice" gift shop for a time. She took great pride in her home and truly enjoyed baking, cooking and keeping house to make the house feel like a home for those she loved. Each holiday season, Renae made an abundance of treats and graciously shared trays with neighbors and friends. She also spent many hours cross stitching and embroidering. Renae was an avid Twins baseball fan, and always had the game on while her hands were busy making beautiful needlework gifts. She adored her children and grandchildren. Renae loved to watch them take part in their school activities and always cheered them on wherever their passions led as their biggest fan. Renae was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. She proudly served as the piano accompanist for the Zion Choir for nearly 40 years, as well as playing for the Sunday School programs and a variety of other events. Her love of God, music and her family were evident in all aspects her of life. Her tender heart and generous spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Renae is survived by her husband, Dennis of Twin Valley; her daughters: Shantel "Shelly" (Todd) Brevik of Twin Valley, Kristen (Wade) Erickson of Fargo, ND, and Marti (Brendan) Christenson of West Fargo, ND; five grandchildren: Hailey Brevik (Ty Swiers), Kelsey Brevik (Austin Merkens), Skylar Brevik, Cole Erickson, and Katelyn Erickson; sister-in-law, Letty Hoekstra; lifelong friend, Linda Byzewski; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers-in-law, Gerald and Robert; and a sister-in-law, Virginia.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley.
