Regina Basswood, age 70, of Ponsford, MN, died on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.

Regina Therese Smith was born December 24, 1952, in White Earth, MN, the 4 ^th youngest child born to Allen and Margaret (Fairbanks) Smith.  Growing up, her family spent a few years in Herman, MN, before moving back to the White Earth Reservation.  Gina attended and graduated from Waubun High School.  Her parents moved to Ice Cracking Lake, rural Ponsford, and she met Delmar "Tonto" Basswood.  They were united in marriage on September 8, 1984, in White Earth, MN.  The couple made their home together in Ponsford where they raised their family.  Over the years, Regina worked various jobs including positions for ICW, DOVE Program, Housekeeping and for the Headstart Program.  She loved children and opened her doors to many foster children.  Overall, foster care was the most rewarding and enjoyable job she did.  Tonto passed away on February 6 ^th and Gina remained in their home until her health suddenly declined and she spent a short time in the hospital.

Regina was a kindhearted, caring individual who opened her home and her heart to anyone in need, always putting others before herself.  In her free time, she enjoyed shopping, going to the casino, playing cards and Scrabble.  Regina also liked watching "House Hunters" and the television shows with the home renovations, constantly picking up ideas to do self-improvements on her own home!  Although gone from this life, she will live on in the hearts of many.

Regina is loved and survived by daughters: Sharon (William Annette) Basswood, Melissa (Jeffrey Annette) Basswood, and Blossom Annette; step-son: LeRoy (Bonnie) Basswood, 29 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters: Mary (Dennis) Zortman, Beverly (Danny) Stevens, Betsy Smith, Charlene Garbow and Alberta (Gus) Bevins; two brothers, Gordon (Dinah) Smith and Mark (Paula) Smith; sister-in-law, Pat Miller; brothers-in-law, Robert DeVall and Thomas Hanks; several nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband in February of 2023; parents; two sons, Mason Smith and Delmar Basswood Jr.; son-in-law, Matthew "Tim" Annette; sisters, Doris DeVall and Doretta Hanks; brothers, Robert Smith and Allen Smith Jr.; brothers-in-law, Joseph Garbow and Joseph Shabaiash.

Funeral Services will be held at the Old Pine Point School on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at 1:00 pm.  Visitation will begin Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 5:00 pm with a ceremony at 7:00 pm and continue until the funeral on Thursday.  Burial will be held in Basswood Family Cemetery.
