Obituary

Priscilla "Percy" Starkey, age 97, of Mahnomen, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Priscilla Cordula, the daughter of Louis and Theresa (Geray) Stall, was born on August 8, 1928, in Beaulieu Township, rural Mahnomen. She attended country school before beginning a long career in waitressing, serving at Bonnie's Café, the Red Apple, and the Dairy Bar.  In 1948, Percy married Harley Starkey at Immanuel Catholic Church in Bejou, MN. They made their home in the Mahnomen area and were blessed with five children. Percy devoted herself to raising her family before returning to waitressing, a job she truly enjoyed. Following Harley's death in 1989, she retired and spent many winters in Arizona, always returning home to Mahnomen for the summer months.

Family was the center of Percy's life. She cherished time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew her as "Grandma Chickie." Her great-grandson, Will, fondly called her "the Dollar Lady" for her tradition of gifting a dollar to the little ones whenever they visited.  Percy made many treasured memories with each of them.    Percy was a longtime member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and her faith anchored her through the many joys and losses of life, including the passing of her husband, three sons, and numerous dear friends. She was known for her spunk, sass, and contagious smile, qualities that brightened every room she entered. Her humor, warmth, and zest for life left lasting impressions on everyone she met.  She gave generously of her time, volunteering in the community and taking part in the Mahnomen Rod and Gun Club. Percy loved trips to the Casino which was her "Happy Place" as well as playing cards and chatting with friends. Even in her later years at the nursing home, she took pride in her eye-catching appearance and treasured every visit from family and friends.

Percy is survived by her daughters, Judy (Steve) Bellefeuille of St. Michael, MN, and Vicky (Tom) Burford of Bagley, MN; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Linda; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harley Starkey; three sons: LeRoy "Rocky," Mark "Sonny", and Terry; 3 sisters: Mary Carter, Lenore Cich, and Stella Vanderplaats; four brothers: Ben, Francis, Harold, and Ervin; and a very special nephew, Arnie Stall.
