Penny Herzog, age 69, of Ulen, MN, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023, at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley, after a brief, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Penny Rae Dosland was born to LeRoy and Dorothy (Nichols) Dosland, of Perley, MN, on January 17, 1954. She graduated from Borup High School in 1972 and attended Moorhead State College (Minnesota State University-Moorhead).  After graduating in 1977 with a double major in Elementary Education and Special Education K-12, Penny began her 33-year teaching career in the Ulen-Hitterdal School District.

On April 14, 1979, Penny married David Herzog of Ulen, MN.  The wedding had to be moved at the last minute from Bethania Lutheran Church in rural Perley to Kirkebo Lutheran Church in the town of Perley because Bethania was surrounded by flood waters!

After retiring as a Special Education teacher in 2010, Penny later became one of the school secretaries, because she missed being involved with the kids.  She held this position for 12 years until her passing.   The staff and students loved her!  She always ended the daily school announcements with "Remember to always be kind and respectful."

Penny loved music and faithfully served 56 years as a church organist, beginning at age 13.  Besides the organ, she provided piano accompaniment to many students in various school productions and competitions, and for many weddings and funerals.  She also served for 13 years as the church secretary at Salem Lutheran Church, in Hitterdal, MN.

Penny enjoyed spending time at the lake and being with and supporting her nieces and nephews. She also loved reading and crafting of all sorts and was especially gifted in ceramics, knitting, crocheting, tatting, and hardanger embroidery.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and wit which she never lost throughout her battle.

Penny is survived by her husband, David; siblings: Connie Gunkel, Urbandale, IA; Mardy (Margaret) Dosland, Perley; Judy (Terry) Guttormson, Hendrum, MN; Cindy (Wayne) Budke, Fargo, ND; and Brendy (Mark) Jossund, Moorhead, MN; her mother-in-law, Irma Herzog, Ulen; brother and sisters-in-law: Lorna (Mike) Berry, Indianopolis, IN; Robert (Jocie) Herzog, Ulen; Shelley Lunder (Mark Christianson), Ulen; Melanie Classic, Evansville, IN; and Kimberly Voegle, Anderson, IN; 27 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; and numerous close friends.

Penny was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Carl (Lila) Herzog; niece, Stacy Herzog Klemetson; and beloved dogs, Annie and Rocky.

A visitation will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 pm, at Salem Lutheran Church in Hitterdal, MN.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal.  Inurnment will be at Keene Cemetery, rural Ulen.

Penny will be dearly missed and always remembered.
