Obituary

Palmer Nelson, 89, of Gary, Minnesota died Tuesday, August 10, 2010 in his home.


Palmer Alvin Nelson was born on the family farm on December 30, 1920 the son of Helge and Gurinee (Baglien) Nelson. He grew up on the farm in Waukon Township east of Gary and attended the # 31 South County School. From a young age, Palmer began helping with the daily chores and learning the ways of farming with his father. At the start of World War II, Palmer enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he served on the USS Philadelphia, a cruiser, and took part in the invasion of Africa and later off the European coasts. At the end of the war, he was honorably discharged and returned to the Gary community. Palmer operated the family farm along with his brother, Gilman, until their retirement in 1987. He continued to make his home on the farm until the time of his death.


As a lifetime member of the Ness Lutheran Church, Palmer served on the church council and on the cemetery board. He also served on the Waukon Township board for many years. From the time he was discharged from the Navy in 1945, Palmer was an active member of the Bejou VFW, serving as a former post commander. After his retirement, he enjoyed going to auction sales and visiting with his friends. Palmer was proud of his Norwegian heritage as he could speak Norwegian and had even taken a trip back to the Old Country to meet family.


He is survived by one sister, Norma Nefzger, Hibbing, Minnesota and one brother, Gilman, Gary, Minnesota and many nieces and nephews.


Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, 6 sisters and 2 brothers.


Funeral services were held Friday, August 13, 2010 at 11:00 am in the Ness Lutheran Church, rural Gary with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor John Ahola officiated with Julia Mae Gullingsrud as organist. The soloist was David Black. Pallbearers were Patrick Halland, John Halland, Jeffrey Halland, Lesley Nefzger, Lynn Thompson and Dean Gunderson. All remaining nieces and nephews were the honorary pallbearers.

Interment was at Ness Lutheran Cemetery, rural Gary.
