Obituary

Ovidia Hillestad, age 90, of Mahnomen, MN, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen, MN.

Ovidia was born in a log cabin northwest of Mahnomen on May 16, 1920, the oldest child of Oscar and Olga (Ose) Hillestad. In her early years, she attended country school and her family often moved from one rented farm to another. Ovidia was confirmed at Ness Lutheran Church, rural Gary, MN, and later became a member of Faaberg Lutheran Church in Rindal, MN. Ovidia's father retired in 1960 and the family purchased a home in Bejou, MN. She worked at Hallstrom's General Store in Bejou for 14 ½ years until it closed, followed by caring for her ill mother until her death in 1980. Then Ovidia worked at the McCollum Store in Bejou for 12 ½ years until her own retirement. In 1996, she moved into the Mahnomen Health Center where she has since made her home.

Ovidia was proud of her Norwegian heritage; speaking only Norwegian until she started school and was then forced to learn English. She was devoted to her parents and brothers and was quite close to a grandfather that had lived with them until his death. Although Ovidia never really had many hobbies, she loved to sew. She made all her own clothes and would often do sewing, patching and alterations for neighbors. Ovidia had great determination and sense of humor, which was especially helpful when she lost her eyesight to macular degeneration. She yearned to return to her home, but always the realist, she would say it was "fun to dream".

Ovidia is survived by one brother, Norbert Hillestad, Mahnomen, MN, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Manford in 1997.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home in Mahnomen. Pastor John Ahola was the officiant with Vangie Hillestad as the organist and Megan Askelson as the soloist. There was also visitation one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Interment was at Faaberg Lutheran Cemetery in Rindal, MN.
