Obituary

Oscar Oppegard, age 56, of Mahnomen, MN, died on Friday, June 9, 2023, at his home.

Oscar John Oppegard was born January 13, 1967, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Mary Oppegard and Gerald Yost.  His youth was spent between the Twin Cities and the White Earth Reservation.  Oscar graduated high school from Circle of Life in White Earth, MN.  Following high school, he entered the workforce.

He worked in steel construction, welding water towers with Tom Giard, traveling all over the United States.  Oscar also worked the graveyard shift at the Shooting Star Casino as a Blackjack Dealer for several years.  In 2013, he had surgery for a brain tumor which forced him into early retirement.  Over the years, Oscar had his share of trials and tribulations but was so very proud to have tackled them and recently completed treatment in April of 2023.

Oscar enjoyed the great outdoors and what it had to offer like hunting, fishing, ricing and leeching.  He had a great sense of humor and was known to be a good singer and dancer.  In his younger years, he played softball and more recently, Oscar liked to play cribbage and had begun beading once again.  Above all, he loved spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.  He will be missed by all his family and friends.

Oscar is survived by three sons: Tyrone Bjorgan of Twin Valley, MN, Oscar J. Oppegard Jr. of White Earth, and Oustin Oppegard of Waubun; three daughters: Veronica Roy of Mahnomen, Trinity (Dylan Schaible) Oppegard of Waubun, and Destiny (Tristan Bjerke) of Mahnomen; five grandchildren: Chloe, Elizabeth, Kelsi, Adrienne, and Ariyah; six brothers: Myron Yost of Ogema, MN, Rick Yost of Bemidji, MN, Jeremy Yost of Fertile, MN, Brandon Yost also of Bemidji, Scott Yost of Twin Valley, MN, and Chris Yost of Ada, MN; four sisters: Yolande Thompson of Mahnomen, Angela Thompson of Moorhead, MN, Sarah Thompson and Maggie Oppegard, both of Savage, MN; aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Randy Miller, Jr.; and a sister, Jodi Kjolberg.
