Orlinda Marion Voit, age 85, of Twin Valley, MN, formerly Mahnomen, MN, died Sunday, August 20, 2017, at the Twin Valley Living Center.
Orlinda M. Balvik, the daughter of Ole and Elsie (Thompson) Balvik, was born on July 17, 1932, in Halstad, MN. She grew up with her family in the Halstad and Shelley, MN areas. She was baptized and later confirmed at the Augustana Lutheran Church near Halstad. Being the eldest of 10 children, Linda attended country school through the 8th grade then stayed home to help raise her brothers and sisters. On February 20, 1960, Linda was united in marriage to Allen Voit. The couple made their home in Mahnomen and was blessed with four children. She was a devoted housewife and mother. Caring for her family was truly Linda's passion and she took great pride in keeping an immaculate home. Even with her meticulous nature, Linda encouraged her children to play, make a mess, and be comfortable in their home, while she continually tidied up behind them and taught them to clean up as well. Linda took great pride in decorating and never hesitated to tackle a painting or other job to make her home her haven. She loved to shop, but at the same time loved a bargain, as she was very frugal. She enjoyed teaching her children all the skills of being a good homemaker along with sewing, embroidery, and being kind to others. Linda was always busy and always willing to help others.
Linda was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen for many years until joining St. Michael's Catholic Church, where Allen attended. After Allen's death on March 27, 2005, Linda remained in her home and active in the Mahnomen Community. She especially enjoyed going to the Red Apple Café for lunch, coffee and fellowship with friends. Linda was a fabulous cook and loved to bake. One of her known specialties was the homemade potato dumplings she often prepared for her brothers and extended family members. Family always looked forward to a special treat made with love in Linda's kitchen. In March, 2015, as her long battle with dementia progressed, Linda moved to the Twin Valley Living Center where she has continued to make her home. With caring family by her side, Linda passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Linda is survived by one son, John of Ghent, MN; three daughters: Sheryl (Jerry) Hudson of Lakewood, CA, Lori (David) Niles of St. Paul, MN, and Julie (Bruce) Carter of Twin Valley, MN; nine grandchildren: Justin Batulanon, Alicia, Jillian and Alexand Niles, Shawn, David, and Travis Carter, and Elizbeth and Joseph Voit; great grandchildren: Jadyn Carter, Kash Carter, Finley Carter, Selah Carter, and Max Carter; two brothers, Elmer (Gerry) Balvik of Jamestown, ND, and Wayne (Arlene) Balvik of Halstad, MN; two sisters, Darlene (Tom) Blair of Apache Juntion, AZ, and Emma Kaiser of Dilworth, MN; a sister-in-law, Rose Balvik of Twin Valley, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
