Obituary

Opal Voit, age 101, of Waubun, MN, died on Tuesday November 29, 2022, at Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Opal Marcella Doucette was born on August 17, 1921, on her family's farm near Waubun, MN, to Alvin and Catherine Doucette, as the youngest of four children. She and her siblings were all named after jewels: Pearl, Emerald and Ruby. In 1924, the family moved to Sartell, MN, followed by a short time in San Francisco and San Diego, CA, and then returning back to Sartell. Opal attended grade school in Sartell followed by high school in Sauk Rapids, MN. Once bussing was available, she moved back to Elbow Lake and graduated from Waubun High School in 1939.

After graduating high school, she completed Business College in St. Cloud, MN. Her first job after graduation was at the Sub-Agency office in White Earth, MN, and soon after she worked in Cass Lake, MN. After working in Cass Lake, she obtained a position with the Department of Interior in Washington D.C., where she lived during war time. In August of 1942, the Department of Interior office was transferred to Chicago, IL, where she worked out of the Merchandise Mart Building, the largest office building in the US, at that time.

Opal married Anton Voit October 31, 1942, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. They were blessed with two daughters, Linda and Marianne. Opal was a stay-at-home mom while the girls were in school. In 1967, Opal began working as a receptionist at Wild Rice Electric Co-Op in Mahnomen, MN, until her retirement in 1987.

Over the years, Opal and Tony enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. Much of their time was spent together at their cabins on Snider Lake and South Twin Lake where they enjoyed fishing and entertaining family and friends. Opal was a great role model, teaching her grandchildren how to play poker, 31 and to drive. Above all, her family was her most important treasure, as she loved spending time with all of them. She loved to travel and was lucky enough to visit 31 states including Hawaii and Alaska. She was also able to visit Rome, Italy. In her later years, she enjoyed going to the casino and playing slot machines.

Opal was a faithful member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Ladies Aide, The National Catholic Society Foresters, The Waubun-Ogema VFW Auxiliary, and a Charter Member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Mahnomen.

Opal is survived by daughter Linda (Ed) Scheler; six grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Catherine; husband, Tony; daughter, Marianne Vigessa; brother, Emerald; and sisters, Pearl and Ruby.
