Opal Viola Hegre, 95, of Fertile, MN, died on Saturday, February 02, 2013, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, MN. She was born on August 15, 1917, to Peter and Stina (Erickson) Flaten in Garfield Township, rural Fertile. Opal was baptized and confirmed at Little Norway Lutheran Church, rural Fertile. Opal attended country school near her home.
On December 3, 1936, Opal was united in marriage to Tilman Hegre in Fertile. Opal was a homemaker until her children were grown. In the 1960's, Opal began working in the kitchen as a cook for the Fertile-Beltrami School. She worked at the school until retiring in 1982. In 1976, her husband, Tilman, died. Opal continued to live in her own home until 2009, when she entered the Fair Meadow Nursing Home.
Opal's smile and joyful spirit lifted the spirits of all who knew her. Her gifts of hospitality enable her to host family and friends for gatherings year around. Opal's church circle members were dear to her heart, as was "touring" in community with her sisters and friends. Embroidery and playing cards occupied some of her free time, but she really enjoyed making food for others to enjoy.
Opal is survived by her daughters: Chloe Leiting, Fertile; Pat (Bob) Fredrickson, Fargo, ND; and Jennifer Urbanski, St. Paul, MN; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Tilman, 5 sisters: Selma Peterson, Myrtle Rothleitner, Cora Billadeau, Florence Helmbrecht, baby sister that died at birth, and two sons-in-law: Ivo Leiting and Ron Urbanski.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at 11 am in the Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN.

Visitation will be one hour before the services in the church.

Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Fertile, MN.
