Oliver J. Sorenson, Jr., 93, Ada, MN, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Benedictine Care Community in Ada.

Oliver was born in rural Hendrum Township to Oliver Sr. and Olga (Hovland) Sorenson on April 16, 1931.

He attended country school, then graduated from Ada High School in 1949. He served his country in the U.S. and Korea from 1952-1954, then returned to his lifelong career of farming.

He met his wife Carol while rollerskating in the Ada Coliseum, which he continued to support. On March 4, 1953, Oliver was united in marriage to Carol Mae Stennes at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, rural Hendrum, MN. They celebrated 71 years of marriage this spring.

He was an active member of Petri Lutheran Church, which merged with First Lutheran Church in Ada to become Grace Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School for several years. He was involved in securing a memorial stone of the history of the Petri Cemetery. This location is adjacent to his farm. He was on the Soil Conservation, Planning and Zoning, and Hegne Township Boards. He and Carol spent several winters traveling the country with family and friends. They enjoyed dancing with the Valley Squares Square Dance Club.

From 1969 to 1973 he and his brother Elmer were Polaris snowmobile dealers, enjoying the riding and racing.

Oliver was a lifelong farmer, getting up in the combine for his last time last fall. He raised cattle, sheep, hogs, sugar beets, wheat, corn and soybeans.

He and his family enjoyed many summers at their cabins on White Earth and McCraney Lakes. His children and grandchildren learned many lessons in building and playing cards. He loved his family dearly; every one of them were so important to him.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, Ada, MN; children, Jeff (Siri) Sorenson, Garreston, SD, Cindy (Gene) Bjerken, Mahnomen, MN; Kim Sorenson, Ada, MN, Becky (LeRoy) Gnadt, Ada, MN, and Perry (LeeAnn) Sorenson, Ada, MN; grandchildren, Michael, Anna, and Jorey Sorenson, Jasen Boit, Christi (Joe Diaz) Boit, Kristen LeClaire, Heather (Sidney) Fry, Jon Sorenson, Michael Gnadt, Mindy (Steven) Zayachowsky, Heidi, Nicholas, and Sarah Gnadt, Matthew (Jessica) Sorenson, and Mindy Young; 16 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and brother, Lennard (Shirley) Sorenson.

Oliver was preceded in death by one daughter, Trudy Ann; one grandson, Wayne; brothers, Clinton and Elmer; and parents, Oliver Sr. and Olga.

Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, MN.

Visitation: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 PM.

Interment with full military rites: Petri Lutheran Cemetery, Ada, MN.
