Olive Burton, age 103, of Fertile, MN, formerly Twin Valley, MN, died Tuesday, February 24, 2015, in Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile.
Olive Viola Bergeson was born near Canby, MN, September 28, 1911, the daughter of Lauritz and Olena (Risdal) Bergeson. At the age of four, she moved with her family to a farm near Twin Valley. She attended the Home Lake rural school through the elementary grades and graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1928. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley.
Olive attended Moorhead State Teachers College and received a one-year rural teaching certificate. She taught in one-room schools in Becker, Norman, Kandiyohi and Yellow Medicine counties of Minnesota. In 1944, she moved to San Antonio, TX, and then to California where she taught elementary grades in Ojai and Los Angeles.
Olive married Dr. William Burton of Los Angeles in 1947. They moved to Las Vegas, NV where she taught school for twenty-four years. During that time, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in Reno, NV. She also completed a year of graduate work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
After her husband died in 1969, Olive taught four more years before she retired and returned to Twin Valley. She spent her final seven years at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile, MN.
Olive is survived by her sister-in-law Adeline Bergeson of Reno, NV, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Roy, Melvin, John and Burnett, and sisters, Mildred Sargent and Gertrude Purrier.
Funeral Services were held on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Twin Valley with visitation one hour prior. There was an Informal Memorial Gathering at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28th at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile.
Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Twin Valley.
